Today, there is a lot of news from the Kurakhove direction.

Here, after Russian forces conducted a series of unsuccessful attempts to find a weak spot in and around Kostiantynivka, the Russian commanders had to adjust their approach. This led to a change in their tactic, and they prepared for one of the largest Russian mechanized assaults since the beginning of the war.

The probing attacks observed over the past month aimed to assess the strength of the Ukrainian response, identify the types of munitions used, and, most crucially, measure the time between detection and response. Since all previous assault units were swiftly and decisively neutralized, Russian commanders concluded that only a significantly larger strike force could ensure at least some troops would reach Kostiantynivka. Consequently, they began assembling a reinforced battalion-sized group consisting of almost 70 vehicles, namely, 11 tanks, 46 armored fighting vehicles, 12 motorcycles, and 200 soldiers. Interestingly the Russians even included one of their rare vehicles – the BMPT Terminator which is designed to be a tank support fighting vehicle and reportedly only 23 units of it have been manufactured as of December 2023. The size and diversity of this assault group underscore the operation’s significance for the Russians and their willingness to invest heavily to secure a foothold in Kostiantynivka and use it as a launchpad for further advances.

The Russian assault group was divided into several sub-groups, each led by a tank, followed by several armored fighting vehicles carrying troops, and then by motorcycles. These sub-groups attacked simultaneously with the strategy of overwhelming the Ukrainian defenders by sheer numbers, thereby splitting their efforts. The goal was to penetrate Kostiantynivka from the south and establish positions there. As you may recall, the defense of this part of the frontline is entrusted to the 79th Air Assault Brigade, one of the most well-prepared and well-equipped elite Ukrainian forces. Drone operators from the brigade maintain rigorous day and night surveillance of the zero line, as well as monitoring the Russian rear to anticipate enemy movements and respond proactively. It is no surprise that they detected this large, armored column from a distance and raised the alarm across all responsible Ukrainian units in the area.

The first line of defense against such armored assaults involves the creation of extensive minefields, and Ukrainian sappers in the region have already demonstrated the thoroughness of their work. However, given the size of the enemy forces, it was evident that relying solely on minefields would be insufficient to halt the Russian offensive. Recognizing the potential for a critical situation, the Ukrainians decided to deploy all available weapons in their arsenal. Geolocated footage published by the brigade shows artillery and kamikaze drones targeting various enemy vehicles on the outskirts of the village. These images not only reveal the sophisticated tactics of the Russians but also highlight the variability in their assault groups. While all follow a similar pattern, their sizes differ, with some groups comprising up to 10 vehicles and others consisting of 3 to 5. The footage underscores the adaptability and readiness of the Ukrainian forces in countering such diverse and large-scale assaults.

At the same time, the video exemplifies the Ukrainian multi-layered approach, consistently aiming to target the lead vehicle of each column. The goal was to destroy it, to either deter the rest of the column from advancing or to immobilize them, making them easier targets for the artillery and drone crews. Various images depict not only the devastating effectiveness of these tactics but also the crucial role of pre-laid minefields, evidenced by several powerful explosions of Russian armored fighting vehicles. This strategic combination led to significant success, with the 79th Air Assault Brigade confirming they had successfully repelled the Russian attack. By taking out the lead vehicles in each sub-group, they inflicted substantial damage: 6 out of 11 tanks were destroyed, 10 out of 46 armored fighting vehicles were taken out, all 12 motorcycles were obliterated, and of the 200 Russian troops, 40 were killed and 37 were injured. This clever defense tactic showcased the effectiveness and preparedness of the…

  2. There's going to be a point in time, years from now, where people will find it almost inconceivable that there were advocates for the Russian side. Advocates who thought that not only were these actions moral, but that this showed military prowess and success on the battlefield. That's why this is so captivating to strategists; how many times can you walk into a buzzsaw before considering other options. Options that are not Hospitals, Schools, Appt Complexes, etc.

  3. This leaves 5/11 tanks that survived, 36/46 afvs, and 123/200 troops left. These are 20-30% losses of any person that goes on the attack which is quite normal.

The fact they still continue to fight means that Russia is truly fighting to the end for its survival, not just to exercise control or political gain. No one would ever think these losses are acceptable unless it was a fight for their survival as a state. All we need to do is come together and sit down and have a conversation for peace, why keep going on these assaults when your nation is not truly in any danger of survival, this is insanity!

  4. Maybe the effectiveness and preparedness of the Ukranian army is ok in this part of the region but in other regions, e.g. the area of Toretsk the Ukranian defenselines, there are no defenselines, are very weak and overthere Russians are advancincing each day already for months. The more Russians are loosing soldiers and equipment , the more they are advancing. It is what it is.

  5. Hello dear commander . Tb k you for the report. Congrats to the Ukraine army and the foreign legions. May God bless and protect you. All of you are in my prayers.

  6. It's my sincere hope seeing how outstanding against all odds, weight of numbers material and every conceivable deficiency the people of UKRAINE have been, at very least all western democracies find a moral compass, backbone and an understanding of the consequences of failing to support for the liberation of UKRAINE. As for the mediators lining up with every nook and cranny of bollocks. Too much blood destruction and a regime mindset better suited in the depths of the worst public latrine on the planet will negate any kind of return to buisness as usual. E.U. policies since the fall of the Soviet union has one terminal flaw, understanding the reality of human nature. We as western democracies are a golden egg ripe for plunder unless we unite in the face of the tryany and support the people of UKRAINE. The crash of 1929 and the ensuing years of hardship will be a footnote of a minor event for the catastrophe we'll be leaving future generations. Supporting the liberation of UKRAINE cannot be overstated, it's not a choice, it's our responsibility for all GLORY TO UKRAINE

  7. I'm an inspector – just for property here in Canada, and this very much reminds me of a proper report, condensed and to the point, although I would have liked a few more specifics. How effective was the artillery fire from each side on both moving and static targets, how integrated were air, rapid assault and static forces for combined arms, and how key were dismounted infantry in what stages of the attack and defense? I really think it's clear that rapid ground forces are too costly logistically and economically and that a move to leap frogging via VTOL air is what's going to have to happen… Then attackers can gain the iniative by putting defense in depth in disarray. You have to put special forces where they aren't and can't rapidly respond from their emplaced defense… Anything else is just insanity. Great report, I know it's hard to come up with all the details especially so soon after an action.

  8. It's so weird to me that the Russians didn't try to take a flanking position from the road in an L-formation attack… Then use the frontal as a feint and have one flanking maneuver on either side laterally from the road be probes to take a more in-detail attack approach… Maybe the town and road were just that well set for defense in depth though. I don't know… So then why not a break through at weaker points to encirlce and besiege? The Russian commands lack of strategic, inter-operational theater coordination continues… The strategic initiative has really been in the hands of the Russians since last June (wow, it's been over a year now), and they've done close to nothing with it. Just really unimpressive.

  9. Does anyone ever think that it would be any different in the American army? If you don't obey orders, you get punished severely going as far as getting shot. Yes, even in the army of the USA.

  10. “Sophisticated tactics by the Russians” sounds like a bit of a stretch these days , they have no modern day tactics.
