As an EU citizen, you have the right to vote in local elections from the first day you arrive in Belgium, but you must register. Non-EU citizens can vote too, after 5 years of living in Belgium. Fortunately, signing up to vote is now simple and can be done quickly online. It only takes 1 minute – but you have to do it by the end of July, so basically by the end of today:

Most non-Belgians can register online using their ID card reader or an app like itsme®. If you don’t have a Belgian card with a chip, you might even be able to use your ID card from your home country. If you still cannot access the online registration platform, you’ll need to sign up using a paper form – more info in the links below.

The local elections in Belgium are taking place on 13 October. If you are traveling or get sick, you can give a proxy to another person to vote on your behalf. As a non-Belgian, you can always unregister so no worries about penalties etc. – this doesn’t apply.

I sincerely hope it requires you to at least show a proof of actually inhabiting the place, right?
