  1. **From The Telegraph’s Joe Barnes:**

Russia will train its troops in Ukraine to use tactical nuclear weapons on the battlefield, Moscow has said.

The training exercises will involve [Iskander-M ballistic missiles](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/05/22/russia-rehearses-nuclear-attack-on-ukraine-censors-warheads/) and various aircraft, Moscow’s defence ministry said in a statement published on the Telegram messaging app.

“During the exercise, issues of preparing units of the armed forces of the Russian Federation for the combat use of non-strategic nuclear weapons will be worked out,” it said.

“As part of this exercise, the personnel of the missile formations of the Southern and Central military districts will work out combat training tasks of obtaining special training ammunition for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile systems, equipping launch vehicles with them and covertly advancing to designated positions in preparation for [conducting electronic launchers](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/07/30/gerbera-russia-drone-iran-shahed-unmanned-aerial-vehicle/).”

“The ongoing stage of the exercise is aimed at gaining the readiness of personnel and equipment of units for the combat use of non-strategic [nuclear weapons](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/06/08/russia-ukraine-war-putin-europe-nuclear-weapons/) to Russia to carry out combat missions,” the ministry’s statement added.

Tactical nuclear weapons have smaller warheads and are designed to achieve a specific battlefield objective, compared to strategic bombs that are meant to target and destroy entire cities.

Pro-war Kremlin outriders have repeatedly urged the use of nuclear weapons both inside and outside of Ukraine.

Ukrainian gains on the battlefield are often met with [calls for the use of a tactical strike](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/07/04/russia-targeting-ukrainian-airbases-f-16-fighters-will-fly/) to protect against potential advances into Russian-occupied territories.

The Moscow-based Council for Foreign and Defence Policy, a think-tank that shapes Russian government thinking, this year proposed a “demonstrative” nuclear explosion to deter the West from sending arms to Ukraine.

The southern and central military districts are two of the five force groupings that make up Russia’s armed forces.

The Russian-occupied areas of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson fall under the umbrella of the southern district.

Vladimir Putin claimed to have annexed the four Ukrainian oblasts via a series of sham referendums in September 2022.

  2. Taking bets on how long they will take to accidentally detonate one on their own training grounds.

  3. Russians running around with Fat Man’s is not something I had on my apocalypse bingo card.

  4. Existing iskander can all be equipped with small nuclear warheads.

It is by no accident that Russia fired their first new 1000km range iskander at Kyiv yesterday. They fired it from 500km away so about half of the maximum distance.

Clearly russia is concerned about losing iskander units by having them too close to Ukraine forces.

If very small tactical nukes are about to be used they will most likely be done via the new long range iskanders from deep inside russian territory.

I dont think russia would risk brining nuclear warheads too close to the active combat zones

  5. I think the real headline here is **”Russia to train troops”** lol

  6. You can tell this is a lie because it says “Russia to train troops”

  7. Russian troops accidentally set off nuclear weapon on Russian territory. Associated press has unconfirmed reports that the nuclear weapons in question were imported from North Korea.

  8. Oh wow

They’re actually gonna *start* training these chucklefucks

Didn’t know Ukrainian fertilizer was even sentient. Very cool.

  9. The implication that Russia’s troops weren’t already trained to use Russia’s nuclear weapons is mildly terrifying.

    Like… who *was*, then?

  10. This is a very interesting development, something I expected would happen at some point including its actual use of small tactical nuclear weapons.

But, and I havent seen official confirmation on this from the US. But I believe that the US mentioned in the past that if Russia were to use them on Ukraine, that the US would not let that action go unpunished. I believe I even saw mention of swiftly eliminating all russian assets in Ukraine as a possible response.

Now, either way any use of nuclear weapons is a serious escalation that needs a response. I just wonder what ‘the west’ is willing to do in such a scenario. I believe the advantage in this case is always who plays the ball first. Because the ‘response’ is harder and could lead to further unwanted escalation.

  11. Turns out for other then the weekly crying wolf, nukes are pretty useless.

  12. That’s all we need, vodka soaked Russian soldiers with nukes on the battlefield.

  13. Maybe we could send them a few to help with training?

  14. The didn’t even teach their soldiers the dangers of radiation around Chernobyl. Allowed them to dig trenches in the Red Forest. Resulted in dozens of men receiving acute radiation poisoning.

The soldiers weren’t even aware that an accident had occurred at Chernobyl… Oddly enough, I think Russian’s are the only people in the world who are unaware of it.

Russian soldiers are poorly trained, poorly equipped, poorly supported. It has become commonplace for drones to observe Russian soldiers committing suicide with their own rifles/grenades. Their collective mental state is poor, and Russia does nothing to improve it.

These are not the kind of people you want in control of tactical warheads.

  15. Unless they are talking about suitcase nukes or Davey Crocket sized nukes, there is no “battlefield” for nuclear weapons. They are launched from ground stations or via strategic bombers.

  16. At this point, does putin even *have* troops capable of being trusted to not snort, fuck or sell a nuke?
