It seems nuts that we’re even considering removing the hydroelectric dams. Strange role reversal with Republican politicians fighting FOR renewable energy.
The beautiful part about renewables is they scale really well, whereas classical hydro is limited by geography. If we had deployed solar, wind, geothermal, small hydro and other kinds enough, this wouldn’t be much of a problem.
I’m against removing the dams and I don’t think doing it will bring back the salmon. The best option to bring back salmon is to reduce commercial fishing and to open up salmon passage North of the Grand Coulee to cooler Canadian tributaries.
The salmon are being killed by global warming and removing the dams contributes to global warming.
Many of the groups lobbying for removing the dams ignore the value of the nonprofit electricity system and seek to dismantle it in a variety of ways, including policies to support California for-profit utilities.

A technical read is https://www.bpa.gov/-/media/Aep/power/hydropower-data-studies/e3-bpa-lower-snake-river-dams-power-replacement-study.pdf. If you skip to the end, Additional LSR Dam Power System Benefits, were not modeled and they are important. All four dams proposed to be removed are part of the automatic generation control for frequency in the Western grid.
