  3. The [National Association of Black Journalists](https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/07/31/us/harris-trump-election) had to beat back a revolt from its membership after inviting former president Donald Trump to a panel discussion at its annunal convention on Wednesday.

    But the organization’s officers likely were vindicated when [Trump self-destructed in a hostile, confrontational session](https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/31/donald-trump-nabj-interview-00172104) in which he insulted them, questioned [Vice President Kamala Harris](https://www.nj.com/topic/kamala-harris/)’ Black heritage while accusing her of using it as a prop, while also making [several factually incorrect statements.](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/live-fact-check-trump-at-the-national-association-of-black-journalists-conference)

    Several times, audience members [laughed at Trump’s answers](https://www.nj.com/politics/2024/07/black-journalists-invite-trump-to-speak-then-laugh-at-him.html).

    While many NABJ members insisted that the organization refuse to give Trump a platform — especially given his history of racist rhetoric — Trump’s appearance provided an argument for the other side.

    “This NABJ interview is a great example of why the people who demand that we de-platform Trump are wrong. People should see this!” [former Republican political consultant Tim Miller tweeted](https://x.com/Timodc/status/1818718897031594467). “A grumpy, cruel, hard-of-hearing, race-baiting, asshole having to actually answer for his track record in an environment outside of his comfort zone.”

    Meanwhile, the Never-Trump Lincoln Project tweeted [a photo of the Hindenburg disaster](https://x.com/ProjectLincoln/status/1818717750866722925).

    In addition, the interview appears to have been cut off sooner than planned.

    “I think we have to leave it there, the Trump team told us to wrap,” ABC reporter Rachel Scott said.

  8. It’s nice to see journalists pushing back on his bullshit. I think last time we saw that happen was when he got interviewed by Jonathan Swan.

    When Trump is not in control, and can’t control the narrative, and people push back… you get the REAL Trump.

  16. You need to see this entire 34 minute interview for yourself. He is not only grumpy — he comes across as really old, too. Like a caricature of the oldest, most racist person in your town. This is as bad for him as the debate was for Biden.

  17. It looked like he was going to win for a short moment, but between Kamala’s momentum and some disastrous appearances and comments by Trump/Vance, things have changed dramatically. Trump is self-destructing.

    The man was allowed to go in front of prominent highly educated African Americans, including three AA women as interviewees, with no teleprompter, clearly no pre-chosen questions, and just…allowed to answer questions??

    Trump called himself “the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln” and the audience loudly groaned. It’s like he forgot he wasn’t in front of a nearly all-white Trump rally crowd.

  24. I just sat through about 15 minutes of this. Trump is definitely unable to pivot to anything new, he is unable to read an audience, and he lashes out at the stupidest things…

    He never had an event start late before because of equipment? And he blamed the one journalist throughout the interview, calling her nasty and just being an asshole to her.

    He couldn’t specifically come up with a plan for black women struggling, doing his inflation bit and just blaming Biden when they were obviously looking for things like childcare, family leave, education and any program that might make it easier for poorer folks to afford raising kids (heck, how about those school lunches?)

    He probably lost another point or two in POC vote today doing this interview…maybe even a half a point of white independents who might have been paying attention.

  29. I saw people commenting about this earlier and figured, “Oh well, just another classic Trump performance.” Then I watched it. Holy shit, what a trainwreck. To show up to that event and then be even MORE racist than your usual self is quite the choice and he came off the entire time as petulant, combative, and meandering. I don’t there was a single question he answered directly. Who knows how much effect it will have on the race, but he went there trying to gain a few more black votes, and if anything, he lost some. That was a Biden-debate level performance from Trump today.

  30. Not sure if this interview could have gone any worse for Trump. It’s almost like he’s giving up cause he KNOWS Kamala is going to win. So he’s just letting his true inner-ugliness bubble-up to the surface.

  31. WIth how Trump freaked out about Rachel Scott’s VERY valid and well-framed initial question, Trump would be a FOOL to dabate Kamala. She will be MUCH less diplomatic and much MORE pointed in her attacks.

  33. He’s not trying to WIN the election. He is galvanizing his racist supporters to help him steal the election. He’s letting them know what’s at stake. Biden better be putting in security measures for when Harris wins and then these racists attempts to attack physically and legally the election results.
