  1. We have enough luxury accomdation. We need basic simple apartments

  2. No matter what the development is and no matter where they want to build it there’s someone with a big mad list of stupid excuses as to why it shouldn’t go ahead, surely at this point nimbyism is at a crisis point and poses a real threat to the strategic development of the country.

  3. >This latest planning application was submitted by Welthomas Property to develop a part 7-storey aparthotel with 93 rooms and a bar/events space alongside The Masonry at 151 Thomas Street.

So yeah, not an exactly helpful development for the housing crisis

  4. I see a lot of jokes but there is a serious problem of people born in an area not being able to afford to live there .

You can talk about improving an area but there’s a difference between building for community and building to generate a financial return. People want parks , social spaces

What people don’t need are rental apartments that are incredibly overpriced and don’t allow tenants to have long term security . If you are renting you are less likely to integrate into your community.

Despite how many new hotels get built the price never seems to go down to a reasonable fee . Any new hotel is built solely for profit , fuck them . They are just another way we are being fucked.

  5. Go up to McGovern’s corner and look at the existing blocks. They never filled the ground floor retail units 20 years on, yet the block across from the department of social protection on Cork Street (Southgate) is hitting almost 500k for a 2-bed on the secondary market and the apartments aren’t listing for more than 3 weeks under current demand.

They **need** more development of all kinds in the Liberties. Full stop.

  6. Gentrification is when you don’t allow new houses to be built and so the people with more money start displacing existing tenants.

You prevent gentrification by allowing more houses to be built in places where people wan to live.

  7. While an aparthotel may not be as welcome as a straightforward apartment block, does it not also help to address the AirBnB problem?

There aren’t enough properties to rent because it’s more lucrative for owners to do AirBnB because traditional short-term accommodation, like hotels and serviced apartments are too expensive/in short supply.

  8. Oh no, they will build something over an unused car park and, weirdly enough, there are other hotels in the area because it’s city center!

I know at least 5 other sites in the area with unused space and rotten buildings, sure these could be used for housing but god forbid anything get build without opposition. We must keep the Liberties shitty and anti-social or people may want to move there.

  9. Sometimes ‘gentrification on steroids’ is a good thing

  10. Gentrification

Yeah because what the liberties rally needs is more Theresa’s gardens type no go areas 🙄

There’s entire bits of the liberties you could walk around now and not get your head kicked in

Won’t someone stop the gentrification before long, you’ll not even be able to buy crack up there 🤦‍♂️

  11. It’s a disgrace Joe.. can we not preserve the. Liberties. It’s a shit hole that should stay that way Joe.
