Despite all of the comments in this sub and others about the evils of capitalism, consumerism is the other side of the same coin. Everything being sold by capitalism is being purchased by a consumer, either directly or indirectly. Directly is pretty straightforward (buying something from Amazon, for example), but indirectly is the companies that manufacture boxes for Amazon. The consumer isn’t purchasing the box from the manufacturer directly, but the cost of the box is built into the purchase price of the item being purchased, so the consumer purchased it indirectly.
You can’t address capitalism unless you also address consumerism. And you can’t address consumerism unless you address the US, the overwhelming world leader in consumer spending.

Our roughly 4% of the world population accounts for almost 42% of all consumer spending in the world, so I think it would be safe to say that modern capitalism is largely being propped up by American consumers.
Reverend Billy is a National Treasure!
Our first ever commandment “to be stewards of the earth”
Why the heck so many sects don’t honour this I have no clue.
Does anyone know the church? I would love to meet him!
