  1. I think at this stage ireland says no not just the locals who on earth wants this

  2. There are 2 intractable positions.

The residents say they want more engagement, but as was pointed out on Prime Time a few nights ago, there has been engagement, and no engagement is enough.

On the other side, the government has to find housing for all the people coming here that they have EU agreements to take. Most of the EU is struggling with migrant problems.

We need to process people faster and get them off home if they shouldn’t be here.

Like other things people dont like in their areas, these centres have to be built somewhere, and ‘locals’ need to accept this.

  3. Lol this government taking the hard line…

So will they flip first or flop?

  4. Scumbags in hoodies don’t own this city nor dictate policy with their bullshit

    Suck it up

  5. The pretentious gombeen has a neck like a jockey’s bollocks.

The government have backed themselves into a corner. Politicians and officials had hoped that public opinion will severely turn against the protesters but that hasn’t seen to have happened and more and more people are starting to see where they are coming from.

  6. Community clearly don’t want them. So the answer is to force them onto the community?

  7. Government: We are going to engage with communities.

Communities: We don’t want them here.

Government: Well you’re getting them anyway.

  8. I would love it if Garda could arrest scum making fires, damaging property and causing unrest and the government would do their job protecting borders. Neither are happening and now government/media is using this small groups of scum as the reason to dismiss any real concerns from locals.

  9. It is immoral that all planning norms can be put aside and these developments can be forced on communities that don’t want them. It’s undemocratic.

A governments first job is to prioritise the needs of its own citizens not citizens from other countries. In Ireland we have the opposite, many of our own citizens are locked out of the housing market living with their parents into their 30s but our government bring in planning exemptions to create accommodation for migrants and nothing for its own citizens.

  10. Even distribution across Irish socioeconomic areas of Irish society. Otherwise it’s Travelers halting sites and poorly planned housing estates.
How will Pat Kenny take an asylum centre in Howth

  11. Imagine feeling a war torn country, only to get attacked by a lad from Coolock.

There are some real fucking scary paths this could take though. Either one of the asylum seekers see die, or they fight back, it’s recorded, and there’s another wave of “violent immigrants attacking Irish citizens” all over X and Facebook to prompt another riot, likely resulting in even more people hurt.

Might book some AL and head off somewhere for a bit, this is going to be a fucking nightmare to watch unfold.

  12. This is only going to end in chaos, security at these sites aren’t equipped to deal with chaos, reminds me of what happened to the security on farm in Roscommon a couple of years ago & it’s only a matter of time before the place gets burned down or someone injured/killed.

The government incompetence is only fanning the fames for chaos & are putting innocent people in the middle who are going feel the wrath of angry people, they had years to plan but just like everything else money & time is wasted.

  13. In Dundrum locals are being so careful to do everything responsibly (peaceful protests and injunctions) but nothing works.

  14. Roderic O’Gorman is talking out his hole despite vocal finger wagging.

  15. So housing projects can be hamstrung if not killed completely by business owners and residents who already have theirs protesting and ‘nothing can be done’. Yet this can be forced through? Huh funny that

  16. I can’t wait for all the shocked articles and politicians in 6 months when the very very obvious consequences arrive.

  17. Wonder would it be a good business opportunity to set up a Molotov cocktail stand outside those sites……

The government message is a pretty loud and clear “go fuck yourself, it’s happening anyway” so I can imagine someone deciding to take matters into their own hands.

  18. That Tipperary site seems to be entirely unsuitable. Does the Minister communicate details about who the new residents might be? If it was Ukrainian families, I can’t imagine too many people having a problem with it. We’ve had a Hotel here in Kilkenny used as an accommodation centre for refugees and while it may not be ideal, there doesn’t appear to be too much hassle. Yes, the government made errors allowing them to be over-subsidised, but I’m pretty sure a lot of that is to change in the next couple of months.

I work in an environment with a high proportion of Ukrainians. The majority of the people I interact with want to integrate, respect the kind of values we uphold and have their sights on eventually returning home. Im not sure if the same can be said for 300 people, the majority male, coming from countries whose values are not in line with a liberal democracy and whose backgrounds are a mystery. Yes, there are genuine cases of people fleeing conflict, but you’ve got your head in the sand if you think that the majority of these men aren’t just migrating for better opportunities. Many of them will be alone (look at the IPAS statistics), and will be idle in a town with little to nothing to offer them. All of this during a housing crisis and at a time when public services are under immense pressure.

Yes, we should uphold the asylum process but those IPAs should be scrutinised. False claims about age/nationality, those travelling by bus from Northern Ireland, damage to passports etc should all be taken seriously and those genuine cases should be housed in urban centres that have the infrastructure to support them. The government is making this stuff up as the story gradually unfolds day by day. There’s been zero planning and any a lack of any real public consensus on the issue. The recent ‘safe list ‘saga further demonstrates that the current government is in the dark about what’s really going on.

  19. I don’t know what these lads are expecting to happen.

There is a significant minority of people in the country that do not want the numbers of refugees that are coming into the country to come that is not going to change.

Say what you will about these people but telling literally 500,000 people to just accept it and that they are being totally unreasonable is not going to go very well.

I would guess there are at least 10% of people in the country that think we are taking too many refugees, I’m not talking about the far right either.

  20. the government are doing this to themselves at this point. what can go wrong when you shove more migrants into an area than people who actually live there?
