  1. Paul Whelan is rumored to be part of the swap as well.

  2. Knowing prisoner swaps gone by, the guy they release to Russia is likely 5 living nuclear warheads that came together to form a bizarre ICBM Voltron.

  3. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-frees-political-prisoners-including-massive-exchange-2024-7?IR=T) reduced by 81%. (I’m a bot)

    > Russia freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan in an exchange with the US, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

    > Many analysts said Gershkovich was likely being held to bring about a prison exchange to retrieve detained Russians, as part of so-called hostage diplomacy.

    > Vanished from their cells Speculation around a potential prisoner swap intensified in recent days as several imprisoned dissidents were moved from their penal colonies this week, including Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian journalist serving 25 years in Russia for criticizing the war in Ukraine.

  4. Exchanging absolutely innocent people for hired killers.

    Russian terrorist tactics as usual.

  5. Well, that’s one thing less that Trump will need to do. You may recall he said he would persuade Putin to release Evan after he’s elected President, not bothering to explain why he would not do it now, if indeed he had the influence with Putin to do so.

  6. Stop going to Russia and you won’t get captured and imprisoned. Yes, even media.

  7. It’s just kidnapping/ransom at the State Level.

  8. No fucking way, did they hand over the guy who assassinated someone in Germany??? 😑

  9. Do not travel to Russia unless you want to become a bargaining chip in a prisoner swap.

  10. If you are an American or any westerner going to Russia (for whatever reason nowadays), you shouldn’t be bailed out by your government. Your freedom will invariably come at the expense of others’ safety when your gov’t will be forced to give up real, dangerous criminals who seek to harm our society.

Whelan and Gershkovich obviously have different back stories and were arrested at different times, but there is no reason to be in Russia now. Tourism? Go somewhere else until Russia loses. Work? You chose money over safety. Family? Too bad so sad… not. Have them visit you or meet them abroad. Journalists? You should be the most aware of these potential work hazards out of anyone.

We can bitch and complain about how unfair it is, but every time this happens there is a potential cost that is much greater than your freedom. Stop bailing out these people.

  11. What!? They’re not waiting for Trump to do this? Has Russia given up on Trump too?

  12. I don’t know how to feel about this. Obviously a number of innocent people will be spared a horrible fate. But at the cost of a number of the most vile criminals walking free. Not to mention it only encourages this hostage taking behavior by Russia. There’s a reason you don’t negotiate with terrorists.

  13. I know journalism is their job, but Russia is definitely not a safe zone for it.

  14. 1.Take an innocent people

    2. Exchange them on killers and spies

    3. PROFIT

  15. What’s interesting to me is less the return of Americans back home (that’s expected in prisoner exchanges) but that a bunch of Russian journalists and activists, most of them without other citizenships (so foreign governments weren’t incentivised to stand up for them), were freed as well. Western governments clearly think they provide some value to them, which, given the Russian opposition-in-exile’s general ineffectiveness over the past two years, I’m not so sure about. Navalny might’ve, but he’s dead.

  16. Can all Americans please stay the fuck away from Russia from now on? Don’t give Putin the opportunity to capture you, torture you and exchange you for a Russian gangster or war criminal. Stop thinking that nothing bad will happen to you in Russia. It will happen. It’s fucking Russia. Being an American in Russia is extremely dangerous. Just stay away for fuck’s sake.

  17. How did they get Berlin to give up Vadim Krasikov???

That guy is serving life without parole for committing a Kremlin-ordered political assassination in the middle of a Berlin park, in the middle of the fucking day o.O

  18. I’m glad that they are being released. But an idiot basketball player for an arms dealer, and now this; it encourages Russia to keep kidnapping US civilians.

  19. Which Western journalists are still in Russia? I believe Steve Rosenberg of the BBC is still there, and I know Geert Groot Koerkamp (from The Netherlands) is still there, but are there any others?

  20. The West gave up Putin’s personal hitman that killed somebody in broad daylight in Berlin for some randoms. Don’t they understand the message they are sending to Russians? Russia will keep doing it and peddle the idea that their agents will always return unharmed.

  21. It’s bullshit that the media calls these “prisoner swaps” when America is giving up terrorists and arms dealers in exchange for reporters and innocent private citizens.

  22. So Russia is looking for new hostages. Any takers? Preferably from US because Too many Americans are too stupid to stay away and it keeps on working with the government having to get them out.

  23. This suggests Putin expects Trump to lose the election, or he would have waited to make a deal with TFG in exchange for an end to Ukraine aid.

  24. Waiting for the Conservatives to start bashing this decision

  25. We don’t negotiate with terrorists.

    Well. Not all the time.

  26. ru🚽🚽ia has other Americans that’s in their prison , and much longer then we think , like

    PAUL WHELAN ?

    GORDON BLACK ?

    ROBERT GILMAN ?

    MARC FOGEL ?

    ROBERT WOODLAND ?

Etc., etc. I didn’t even put the dual citizens names on here
