TLDR: before Eastern European Countries entered the EU,there were a lot(**i think over 130) bilateral investment agreements made with Western Countries**
they were a bureaucratic mess, and also clashed with European law(lets say,Austria-Slovakia investment Treaty gave “favorable’ treatment to Austrian investors, or give arbitration awards to them that were higher than for investors from other countries)
there was a bureaucratic mess of rules and laws, which were settled in front of private arbitrage courts
with the of BITs it is estimated that around **10% of global investment arbitration lawyers** will be affected(i had this in a class and will search the source of it)
also it paves the way for a common investment policy vis-a-vis third countries
So investments will now go through the EU exclusively?
Sweden, Ireland, Austria? Explain yourselves.
color coding is a bit bad in my opinion, i think the countries that didn’t sign should be in red, and the signed but not ratified should be grey.
