  2. I think there are two attacks that are *really* getting under Trump’s skin. One is calling him “too old” and the other is, of course, calling him weird. You can tell he just doesn’t know how to respond to it and it bothers him so much.

  16. I was listening to an interview with Tig Notaro awhile back and she was saying how calling someone weird completely shuts down the conversation. Even if they jokingly say “you’re so weird,” that there’s not really any response to that. You immediately feel awkward and want to shuffle away.

  21. I heard somewhere that the reason calling them weird works is because most people anywhere on the political spectrum (but especially conservatives) like to feel feared. They’d rather be labeled traitors and racists because at least we fear those things. We don’t fear weird, so calling them weird short circuits their little pea brains.

  22. His entire mental image is that he’s the guy everyone else wants to be, the coolest, richest, smartest, sexiest man on Earth. Trump sees himself as the man all women want to be with and all men want to be.

    So a woman calling him weird shatters that illusion, revealing the ugly truth underneath.

  28. The funny thing to me is, this is Trump’s own thing. Most of his political success came from his tactic of just shit-talking people, and then floundering to respond to that kind of rhetoric. And because they keep trying to respond to it, the media cycle is still talking about Trump and what he’s done, instead of his opponents.

    I remember when Hillary Clinton tried to get ahead of “Crooked Hillary” in ‘16. She tried to call names back, but in a weird, $3 word way that most people didn’t understand and which had no charisma (I think she tried to label him “Vicicious Trump”). And because she did that, people were comparing it to Crooked Hillary, and the name stuck to her.

    Now, the more Republicans obsess over being called weird, the weirder they look, and the more people talk about how weird they are. The logical answer would be to try and move past it, and try to make people forget it. But their egos make them keep taking the bait.

  34. Weird is actually a soft word, nearly nice. Especially when you put it next to his rampant sexism and racism. That’s a very powerful tactic by Harris, I’d say. It fits her positivity better, also. If the democrats keep it up this way, Trump could not be a contendor by election day. They undress the emperor very gently but visible.
