HMS Victory – the oldest commissioned warship in the world

  1. Fitting of a country that still thinks that monarchs matter to keep a ship in commission that hasn’t been able to float for 100 years.

  2. She is lovely, alas that she is not seaworthy, but the other British ship of similar vintage which deserves some publicity is the frigate Trincomalee, now a museum exhibit in Hartlepool. Fifty two years younger than Victory – her construction ordered in 1812 – she was made of teak, and is still afloat, finding various active uses until 1986, when she was restored for exhibition.

  3. I have some oak and copper plating from her that was removed during the restoration, I’m still trying to decide what I’m going to do with it. I saw the Cutty Sark last week, also a good looking ship.
