UK scientists set new record for generating energy from nuclear fusion but commercial application still years away

  1. That’s commendable, especially since – from what I heard – investment in fusion energy in the UK is tiny compared to other countries.

Edit: my bad, this is still under JET. I thought this might have been one of the UK’s own programs (STEP?)

  2. I’ve set a new personal record of 15 push-ups. Can I get an article about it? Something on the line of “new record set”.

    >Brexit threw the plans for JET in doubt. As part of its plan to leave the EU, the UK was to leave Euratom, which provides the funding for JET.[33] Talks on the funding after 2018, when the 5-year plan expired, commenced and a new agreement to extend JET’s operation until 2019 or 2020 appeared to be largely complete. These talks were put on hold after the Brexit announcement.[10] However, in March 2019, the UK Government and European Commission signed a contract extension for JET.[34] This guaranteed JET operations until the end of 2024 regardless of Brexit situation.[35] In December 2020, a JET upgrade commenced using tritium as part of its contribution to ITER, and in June 2021 it will begin fusing a deuterium-tritium fuel.[4]

JET is the remains of an EU project that was located in the UK.

  4. Note that the the title saying “UK scientists” is correct, but incomplete. This involved scientists from various European countries.

  5. I’ve read the facility will be dismanteling in the near future and is moving to the south of france.

  6. Knowing the UK, they’ll probably crack the tech. Sell the whitepaper and knowledge base. The Americans, Chinese and Japanese will copy it, build an enhanced version of it and sell it back to them. They’ll then complain about how expensive a Nuclear Fusion reactor is to build and have lots of political wrangling over it for decades as to how it should be funded with endless environmentalist protesting about it’s site or location. It then becomes a political topic kicked down the road by any new government.

  7. Do not be fooled. nuclear fusion will not solve our problems. While it might solve the issue of greenhouse gasses released with energy production, there will still be to many of you nerds. all forms of human activity are detrimental to our surroundings ability to sustain us.

  8. What is actually cool about this is they’ve essentially proven a new build concept works, and that concept is being used for the ITER reactor in France, except on a much larger scale

Potentially not far off breaking even
