Note that the current proposal is for robots to be used to _support_ front line troops in a primarily logistical role, rather than _replacing_ front line troops.
Do you want Skynet?
Because this is how you get Skynet.
Radio program years ago about a research company making insect sized drones, that could fly around an enemy building or work in swarms to overwhelm security. One was based on a dragonfly because they’re the best flyers. He also said nature doesn’t make wheels and roads it makes wings and legs.
And then the other side start using clones, order 66 and bam, a sith is now in control
This is literally where most of these high end robotics companies get their funding from, as much as the companies say the robots won’t be able to fire weapons its only a matter of time before they strap a belt fed machine gun on the back of a robot dog.
I don’t get why this is news. The MoD launched a £160m programme to develop autonomous vehicles in 2019.
Tracked robots are already in use in militaries across the world. And there are already semi-autonomous machine guns (made by Samsung) in the Korean DMZ.
Also, the US Marines tested quad-ped robots (LS3s) as pack animals. They failed spectacularly – mostly due to breakdowns, noise, poor traverse capabilities and short ranges.
Eh just as long as the Robots don’t start developing sapience and rebel, we should be fine.
Heck it might be a good thing if future wars are just two sides robots slugging it out until one side surrenders.
The long run goal, thinking 500 years ahead is the rather frightening prospect of fully mechanized warfare where we destroy each other remotely. The end result of this being planet destroying.
Theres a reason pretty much every Sci Fi story has some ban on AI or they’re involved as a plot point. With no human life at stake wars could go on brutally for decades.
It looks like you’re trying to bomb a wedding, would you like some help?
