  1. On the one hand, I want to bury Shapiro as a candidate

    On the other hand……fuckin’ newsweek

  2. Reaponding to the deleted comment, and a note in general of why this matters –

He wanted to imprison college protesters, this year. He called them today’s KKK, this year. The context of his virulent racism against Palestinians is relevant, and especially relevant in any idea of removing the freedom of speech of people who are his age when he made those old comments

  3. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.newsweek.com/josh-shapiro-comments-palestinians-resurface-1933984) reduced by 87%. (I’m a bot)

    > Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's past remarks about Palestinians have resurfaced amid speculation that he could become Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate.

    > On Friday, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on remarks Shapiro made about Palestinians in a 1993 opinion piece published when he was a 21-year-old student and worked at the University of Rochester's student newspaper, the Campus Times.

    > One congressional Democrat said Shapiro and the other vice presidential contenders differ little in their approach to Israel and Palestinian relations, raising questions about whether antisemitism is to blame for the opposition to Shapiro since he is Jewish.

  4. People like to bring out that this was when he was twenty but it should be noted that when it came to light that Virginia governor Ralph Northam wore blackface in a highschool yearbook photo, Kamala Harris called for his resignation.

  5. I think it’s time Harris picks a VP already, ideally not Shapiro.

The longer it goes on the more bad press solid Dems are going to get

  6. As much as don’t want him as a candidate it’s hard to care about the cringe anyone posted 30 years ago.

As long as he doesn’t believe it anymore it’s a non issue.

He needs to answer for why he supported private school vouchers last year.

  7. Whether you dislike him or dislike Israel. The comments the article are referring to are no different than the comments 99% of the people on this sub say about Israelis, as well as 31 years old. Anyone upset by his statement 31 years ago 100% has used the same rhetoric against Israelis in regards of being too battle minded.

  8. Comment he made when he was 21?? So, nobody is allowed to have opinions as a young adult and then learn and grow up and change your opinions? This is not news.

  9. I know the damage is done once it’s published by news media, but…they’re really holding him accountable for something he said when he was a young, college kid?

People change and so do their opinions and stances over time. I believe him when he says his views have changed since college, but I know more than enough people will read the headline and assuming he’s anti-Palestinian* to this day, without the added context.

I still prefer Kelly as VP. We’ll keep Shapiro here.

  10. Just so we’re clear, all of the VP picks support Israel in some capacity or another. So we’re going to need a different metric to determine the viability of each pick. There’s electoral strategy, considerations on if something happens to Kamala as president, how good they are at communicating and overall vibes. Whoever the VP pick is will have to be able to bring in both progressives and moderates in the swing states, moderates who may not care about the whole Palestine issue as much as people on Reddit do.

And one more thing. Whoever Kamala picks, if she wins, she’s going to have to spend a lot of time with. They’re going to have to be able to talk about anything and everything, no holds barred. So there’s also going to need to be some personal chemistry as well.

  11. Here’s what I know: just a few months ago this party was very deeply divided over Israel. We feared the National Convention in Chicago this year would look like the National Convention in Chicago in 1968. That tension has greatly died down with a new candidate, and it looks like the Arab American vote in Michigan is coming back to the Dems.

I’ll still support Kamala if she thinks Josh Shapiro is the right pick and I think he’ll do very well in interviews, rallies and the VP debate against JD Vance. But… do we really want to risk all that tension and division being revived?

  12. I feel like shes going to pick this idiot and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    I really hope I’m wrong.

  13. Why is everyone focusing so much on Shapiro when Kelly clapped for Netanyahu and also said “For all we know Iran is funding the anti-Israel protests” and that protesters may be “Iran’s useful idiots.”

  14. Shapiro may not be the best choice for VP but bringing up comments he made in 1993 at 21 years old is not a legitimate line of attack. Most people’s political identity is nowhere close to be fully formed at that age.

  15. This VP sweepstakes has been such a shitshow, people on the same team sniping at each other, I thank goodness the democrats went with Kamala instead of having a mini-primary like those idiot Pod boys wanted. And meanwhile the Republicans are shitting their pants because their entire campaign strategy for THREE years was to portray as old and in cognitive decline, which now perfectly describes their Hannibal Lecter and shark obsessed candidate. And they, who want to install their cult leader as king, are complaining it’s undemocratic, as nobody voted for Kamala, lol – besides the 81 million who voted for her as VP. Meanwhile, hundreds of coal rolling would be entrepreneurs are wondering what to do with their warehouses packed with Let’s Go Brandon bumper stickers.

  16. I think it’s going to be Walz. Pelosi and some leadership have said they want Walz and there was some reporting that the Walz meeting went well. Shaprio’s got skeletons (even if they are a bit manufactured), Kelly’s gravitas can come across as boring, and Beshear’s just kinda meh presentation-wise. Walz has got a small-town Midwestern charm that’s clearly authentic, a stellar resume, and charisma. He can get to places that are hard for Harris to reach and talk to people that are more likely to listen to a message coming from him.

That being said, I think the vast majority of voters would be fine with any of them. I’d prefer it not to be Shapiro personally but it wouldn’t be really surprising to me if she picked him. In the same way that I didn’t think much about Joe Biden when he was VP and Kamala Harris when she was VP, I think the vast majority of Americans (especially the low-information, low-engagement swing voters they’re going after) won’t know much about whatever VP she picks. r/politics users (including me) are terminally online serial worriers, so I get why everyone’s freaking out about Shapiro, but I think a lot of voters will look at whoever it is, note that they’re not a weird alt-right couch fucker, and move on with their day.

  17. this has always been my biggest issue with him. Choosing him will reignite the Gaza conversation all over again. We don’t that right now.

  18. The mere existence of this thread is why he should not be the pick. Kamala has momentum. Anything that might possibly check that momentum is bad. The last thing we want is a controversy over her VP pick that’s tied up with the Israel /Gaza/Antisemitism debate. It’s a lose/lose/lose. And this from a Jew who very much wants a Jew in the White House… Oh, wait…

  19. Not sure why this guy is considered the frontrunner. He’s the only one I’m hearing problematic shit about every day, and the majority of democrats I’ve talked to wouldn’t put him near the top of their list.

  20. Kamala is pro Israel though. His stance is the same as Harris’ but worded less kindly. Also it was comments made in 1993. That’s a long time ago.

  21. Someone who volunteered for a foreign military should not be allowed to be 2nd in line to the presidency.

  22. He was 21…. And his views have changed. I think this was a reach but that’s just me

  23. As long as she doesn’t pick a weird couch fucker, I’m pretty sure we’re fine, but I still want the Astronaut. He maybe boring. Others might be more charismatic, but he’s got the best story by far and he’s a Cis white dude. I think Harris/Kelly is the way to go.

  24. I understand Shapiro as a strategic pick, but I think walk can also carry PA. Trump is so god damn unloveable even an assassination attempt won’t save his greedy, dumb, poopy fat ass.

  25. Idk preffer Mark Kelly get the VP nomination but that crazy nutjob of Kari Lake is running for senate. If Kelly were to be the VP nominee, Kari Lake has a strong possiblility to win the senate seat. Well, that’s what I think at least. I’d like to hear your thoughts.

  26. There’s some dorkery going on here. Is this really all over some essay he wrote when he was a 21? Lmao who cares. As far as his current position goes, what’s he said? The same stuff all politicians say apparently. Ofc none of this will stop progressives from complaining about it, so Shapiro will have to do a mea culpa and clarify his position as soon as he as picked. I think it should be fine

  27. Comments he made as a student in 1993. Who cares? The comments wasn’t even that bad.

  28. He was 21… fuck. Look at what the other side is saying *today*. If this is the worst they can come up with, he must be squeaky clean.

  29. PA is so goddamn important to win, I don’t think any path is viable without it. BUT, that is also why Sec. Clinton picked Tim Kaine in 2016, and look how that went down. VP Harris should consider who she vibes best with just as much as what state the running mate will be from.

All that said… Buttigieg is, to me, the real right answer and I wish he was still in consideration, but it appears he is not. 🤷‍♂️ doesn’t matter, still voting for Harris.
