  1. **Explanation:**

    The map is based on IPs visible on the BitTorrent network on the torrents related to popular movies. The movie list is taken from IMDB top 250 list (by vote count). When you download anything via a torrent, you report to a server called a tracker (when not using the DHT mechanism). The tracker keeps a log of who is downloading what so that it may connect different participants or peers to each other. You can ask the tracker to give you a list of peers so that you can download the content. You can ask use this info to count the IPs by countries.

    The top chart shows a map colored by the number of IPs visible on torrents of popular movies. The bottom chart shows the location of each of the 21 thousand IPs encountered during the scan.

    **Interpretation:**

    A fact to note here is that trackers often return the list of IPs which are seeding with complete content i.e. after it has finished downloading not just during mutual exchange. So, the countries which are generous with sharing will be ranked higher here.

    **Data Sources:**

    * IMDB Top 250 – movie list
    * Torrents: Scrapping torrentio API.
    * Trackers: [Popular 20 trackers from GitHub](https://github.com/ngosang/trackerslist)

    **Tools Used:**

    * Python
    * GeoIP2 (converting IPs to location)
    * SQLite
    * Plotly (for charts)

  2. Bittorent isn’t the only solution. In Vietnam there’s whole stores selling pirated movies.

  3. A sizeable population in India doesn’t have PC but they do have Mobile, Internet and Telegram. So this data isn’t a complete picture.

  4. As an Israeli, I am both proud and disappointed in us, we have 100 unique IPs per million people, that looks like #1 in the world!

  5. Did you know some people in countries like e.g. Equador don’t even know torrents because they go to the market and buy the movie copied on a DVD 🤣

  6. This is irrelevant, but I first misread this title as “Which country’s pirate movies are the worst?” And I was very curious to see how that was measured and to learn about pirate movies from other countries lol

  7. I wouldn’t be surprised if the ip addresses from Germany belonged exclusively to lawyers.

    Also I guess you were only looking at public trackers. In Hungary the popular bittorrent sites are private (invite only).

  8. roflmao.. everyone I know who uses torrents also uses VPN and switches their country by default.. easiest way to stay out of trouble
