  1. I would say he’s a great cast for the role but the Tony / Doom thing will be weird unless it’s a dark Tony thing

  2. that’s because it feels like a giant PR move to make up for Jonathan Majors’ abuse and the MCU being in a slump. I always figured since last March that Kang would be swapped out for Doom and that It was always guaranteed that RDJ would be back. But having him play ~~an evil Iron Man variant~~ Dr. Doom is just weird

I have no doubt RDJ will play the role well but
he was already the face of the MCU for over a decade. It’d be like casting Harrison Ford to play a Sith master, Bale as Mr. Freeze, or Daniel Craig as Blofeld. It’s less inspired casting and more meta (and distracting) casting. Just have him come back as Tony from another universe in Secret Wars that way he’ll share the screen with Jackman, Maguire, and co

  3. “Somewhat confusingly, Downey Jr. is not playing Doom as a twisted multiverse variant of Tony Stark—he is Victor Von Doom, the comic-accurate character, a brand new addition to the MCU.”

So there’s no storyline reason to cast him.

I dont know why they’d risk alienating fans when they could get another marquee actor. I see this casting as putting off more fans who are kinda neutral on the MCU future than attracting them.

  4. I’m hoping it’s a misdirection. They should let someone else have a chance to be a star.

  5. I’m one of those people who arent thrilled about this; I get that he’s the safest choice to bring back MCU fans, but man is it boring. I am so tired of big names taking up these roles because I want to see the characters come to life on their own instead of seeing the celebrity.

The Fox X-Men films struck a good balance between casting A-Listers (Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry) and lesser known stars (Hugh Jackman, Famke Jannsen) so they were able to make those characters their own versus molding characters around the star. /Endnerdrant

  6. Feige kept going on about how he’d never undo Tony’s death at the end of Endgame, cause it’s somehow sacred, and then he desecrates Tony’s grave in the worst possible way that it made Deadpool 3’s opening look tame, lol.

Yeah, fans wanted RDJ back, but definitely not like this.

  7. This is exactly like when the Spider Man franchise got Tobey McGuire to play the Green Goblin in the Tom Holland movies.

Wait no it’s not cuz that’s a really fucking stupid idea.

  8. I for one, won’t stand for it. This is an outrage, a mockery, and a sham being perpetrated by the studio. I refuse to even acknowledge it. Shame shame shame.

  9. Yeah. If anybody has their finger on the pulse of nerd culture it’s FORBES.

  10. If he literally plays Victor Von Doom, the character from the comics and not some kind of AI voice or multiverse side character I’ll be stunned. This is just marketing.

  11. Mans gotta ~~sell out~~ make a living.

MCU is on a bit of a treadmill now, with the movies

  12. Here’s my unpopular opinion. The multiverse was popular and interesting for a minute in the spiderverse. Now it just seems like lazy writing and an excuse to do whatever. I want a new flavor not vanilla bean.

  13. Could be just me, and probably only me that wants this, but why not, and hear me out now, but why cant we have Julian Mcmahon cast to play Dr. Doom? You know, the guy who was originally cast as him in the original F4?

  14. Well ya. When you pay the the star and directors over 100 million dollars the actual film suffers. Their insane paydays means less for other actors, crew, props, VFX, screen writers etc etc.

  15. I feel so bad for people who think fans are owed anything anymore from IPs bought by companies with more money than god.

  16. This was bound to happen. Instead of everything being golden, there’s just a golden era

  17. Eh I’m not gonna see any more marvel stuff for a decade or so.

  18. I pretty much tuned out the MCU within a few movies/shows after Endgame. The whole thing is a massive confusing clusterfuck. And casting Tony Stark as Doom ain’t getting me back in the theater. I rolled my eyes when I heard the news.

  19. It was never good to begin with. If you’re going to adapt something, adapt it faithfully.

  20. It wouldn’t be casting news if some group wasn’t all riled up on the internet. I’m just glad for once it isn’t blatant racism like usual

  21. I simply cannot be bothered to build up any sort of anger on this issue.

RDJ is great and a known quantity when it comes to delivering charismatic, compelling performances in superhero movies. If he does well with this role? Cool.

  22. If he’s coming back and playing an alternate reality Tony Stark that becomes Dr. Doom instead of Iron Man, I’m cool with that.

  23. All these fans mad about this I gotta wonder, have they read Marvel comics? Marvel undoes and reboots and flips things around all the time and they have for decades. This is not shocking at all. I didn’t even blink when his casting was announced.

Besides, RDJ rules. He’ll probably be an awesome Doom!

  24. Honestly, Marvel has gotten really good about keeping tight lipped about secrets and even pumping fake scenes into their trailers.

Wouldn’t surprise me that we only know about 25% of the truth yet.

  25. I don’t care for the MCU but i dig Downey’s obvious enthusiasm for his comeback to the franchise, ngl.

I mean, his theatrical reveal? Priceless

  26. It might work. This is a confusing choice, but most of all, marvel has screwed up the STORY so monumentally bad. Like, where even are we in the multiverse saga? Hoping capn sets this all right? Oy.

  27. Calm down, everyone is probably an alternate timeline RDjr that is basically replacing the Kang the Conquer story

  28. I know RDJ is a good actor, but I can’t see him as Doom if he’s been playing as Iron Man for over 10 years. There might be a multiverse explanation to this, but I just see it as a desperate attempt to bring back more audience into the MCU again because fans miss him and that’s not a good thing.

  29. Should have left Stark alive, but NOOOOOO you didn’t want to be a superhero anymore.

  30. Dumb idea. He only just left. At least let people miss him first. Are there no other actors in Hollywood?

  31. There would be no marvel universe without the comics but they’re to blame here when they started with their multi-verse bullshit. With multi-verse scenarios you cover all kinds of terrible plot holes and inconceivable actions. Lazy writing.

  32. People are freaking out don’t understand the story and multiverse. This is a version of Doom, not The Doom .

  33. It’s an ego boost for everyone involved and I’m not interested

  34. Is he going to play a supremely confident near borderline arrogant character with lots of charisma who is also super intelligent like he never does with his other roles?

    Just asking!

  35. God I’m so tired of super hero movies. Why are people so obsessed with these?

  36. It’s gonna be dope I work construction and I guy I used to work with had an Awesome Dr Doom Tattoo lol.

  37. BTW, they are also paying him over $80M I hear…seems stupid to me…

  38. He sure doesn’t need the money. Dude got *points* on those Avenger movies…

  39. RDJ is great, but both this and Pedro’s casting are too old. They should have gone longer if this is a 10 year or more franchise.

  40. I am also not thrilled about Victor Von Downey Jr. Bring in actors just as talented. The light needs to be shared at some point
