Your mortgage applications may be restricted by a lack of Finnish proficiency.

  1. One part from the article:

“S-Bank acknowledged that the organization had strict language requirements for mortgage loans in a statement to Yle.

Even with an interpreter, the bank will not lend to someone who does not speak Finnish or Swedish well enough.”

It is pretty strange that they do not accept or let you have assistance from an interpreter. It makes you question if it is truly intention of “protecting the customer from signing a document that they do not understand fully”.

  2. How about this: learn the language of the country you leave in. Simple. Too lazy? There are literally hundreds of other countries. Nobody’s forcing you to leave in Finland. Bye.

  3. OP and Nordea at least have good English customer service – S-pankki just doesn’t want our money lol

  4. Yeah I had to take a loan to Nordea. I mean, if the other banks don’t want my money then okay, I’ll just go elsewhere? 🤷 It’s not that difficult to provide contracts in English nowadays.

  5. Nothing new, this happens all the time. Just a few days ago I tried to get a dentist appointment at the health care center, “No, only for Finnish speakers”. I heard this sentence so many times already. And, many websites also state “Only Finnish or Swedish, if not, you can get a translator in your language”.

  6. The staff at a large electronics store in Poland will also reject your loan if you don’t speak Polish and have the ability to understand the contract. Taking a translator with you makes no difference.

So, its not only Finland that does this.

  7. S-Pankki have issues with foreign customers; they’ve been taken to the Supreme Court of Finland at least twice regarding acceptance of EU identification documents (passports) and not being in compliance with EU-Law on these matters.
