Seriously, Japan? Wtf
Well everything else is going wrong, japan just adding to the chaos
So many good things about Japan. And then they do stuff like this. Those poor creatures should be left alone.
How did Japan know it was the first one?
South Park taught us how the Japanese feel about these things.
If there is one thing I know about Japan, is they fucking love killing whales
Quick!!! Post the cow/chicken photo to r/Japan!!!!
I think it is always much easier to see the aspects of a culture that are a bit depraved when you aren’t in that culture. I mean, don’t take this as whataboutism, if you took a close look at US pork production and its treatment of animals that are at least as smart as dogs it might not seem like it is worth it for bacon, (high bar I know.)
No one in here has said it and the article doesn’t seem to mention it either, WHY do they hunt whales?
That part of your culture thoroughly sucks, Japan.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.theinertia.com/news/japan-fin-whale-hunting-first-kill/) reduced by 82%. (I’m a bot)

> Japan has killed its first fin whale in years, despite most of the world strongly opposing the decision.
> Japan just announced that it killed its first fin whale in years.
> "The fin whale is the second largest animal on earth. Putting it in the gunsights in 2024 is a big mistake for Japan, for whales, and for the international community working to protect them. We call on Japan immediately to withdraw this indefensible decision," Catherine Bell, Director of International Policy at the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said in a statement sent to IFLScience.

Yen is down. People gotta eat.

What is the real reason? Because it’s definitely not “for science”
There is so much about Japanese culture to admire, but their refusal to stop killing whales is disgusting.
Japanese and their protected delicacies and trophies. This just reminds me of the movie Babel where the rich japanese parent goes hunting for protected wildlife for fun, while his daughter is having a mental breakdown.
If there is one thing you can’t stop the Japanese from doing, it’s killing.
Yo comment section! We Norwegians eat whale as well, dont forget us
One tradition that needs to be stopped.
Are those groups still out there fucking with their whaling fleets? Seems like I haven’t heard about them in ages.
They need to let that Greenpeace man go. Because Japan keeps sending these dolphin/whale vessels cosplaying as “scientific research vessels”.
Like what dude scientifically killing the dolphins and whales.
South Park wasn’t telling No lies
When they say “Japan kills whale”, does it mean that this is endorsed by the government? How does it work? Do they give permission to one ship like “okay today you can kill a whale”?
Where’s Sea Shepherd?
Just sucks. We all know the SP episode is hilarious but can we please leave these gentle fucking creatures alone.
Where is the Enterprise crew when you need’em? (star trek iv the voyage home)
save the whales!
Not cool
Whales are highly intelligent and social creatures with family structures like humans. The fin whale’s conservation status is “vulnerable”, so not super bad, but not good. Killing them for food when it is not necessary seems wrong. I hope Sea Shepherd or Greenpeace or other groups keep these clowns under pressure, because governments are clearly failing.
No one has time to be outraged
if theres hunting then somebody is still eating whales?! cmon wtf
Wait until you learn about their war crimes!
Go vegan
They also killed the stock market yesterday despite global condemnation
CURSE YOU, WHALE! I HEREBY VOW, YOU WILL RUE THIS DAY!
I’ll never understand why Japan chose this hill to die on. Very few people are interested in eating the meat, the ones that are must have brain damage, because it’s the most toxic mercury filled garbage known to man. The “research” hunts damage Japan’s international image, as they’re killing one of the most beloved animals. There’s literally no upside to this.
Japanese whalers are arseholes that all need to be lined up and harpooned just so they can experience what it’s like
Now that the menace Paul Walker is in jail, the Japanese can carry out their righteous cause to make all sea mammals extinct.
Japan has vending machines with used underwear, I really don’t think they care what anyone thinks…
Jesus Japan, come on now. It’s 2024, do you REALLY need to be killing whales when we have so few left?
What’s Japan’s problem with whales and dolphins?
why arent we doing more to switch over to green meats
So disgusting.
The industry undoubtedly will die out on its own. We’re talking about 200 whales hunted in 2023, compared to more than 2000 in the 1980’s.
When my father was child in rural Japan whale meat was the “poor man’s beef” and was a normal part of life.
Now they are pretty much restricted to specialty restaurants that mainly feed off of nostalgia
Rey whale is going to be pissed
how about the united states making japan change on this?
if I were an alien looking at earth I would conclude that humans hate whales and are actively trying to wipe them to extinction
