    This is just trying to save face, because they’ve been barking like crazy but now that the fence is open, they don’t really want to follow it up

  5. Iran is trying to grow some political clout around the attack – a lot of people are more willing to talk to them to try to defuse the situation than otherwise might be. It’s not appeasement as they aren’t getting anything, but just being talked to makes them feel important.

    On the practical side, there are downsides for Israel in this – flights are restricted for cancelled, along with other commerce issues, and there is a psychological toll involved in waiting on the response.

    On the other hand, the longer the delay, the more time Israel has to plan their defense. I can’t say exactly what this would involve, but at least one issue that has come to light is that Iran and proxies have heavily probed Israeli defenses, and know at least some weak spots. It seems to me that Israel could shuffle units around to shift weaknesses around – unfortunately there simply aren’t enough defenses for there not to be at least some gaps.
