  1. I get that Israel is a literal lynchpin to hold the Middle East “together” but that’s just gross.  The US should be at a ceremony for the thing they literally did, Israel should make no difference.

  2. Do yourself a favor and read the article, then come back here and look at some of these goofy ass comments. You’d think the US had decided to nuke them again based on these goofy, outlandish akes.

  3. “the risk of unexpected incidents during the ceremony” was a pretty stupid reason to not invite Israel

  4. It is a dumb decision (by the city). What’s the point of the ceremony if not to remind the nations that have the capability of nukes the consequences of using it. And for what reason did Israel not get invited? Are they boycotting Israel for fighting a terror organisation that started a war by killing hundreds of innocent people in a single day, and holds hostages in terrible conditions? Miserable decision..

  5. As an American who truly believed at one point that voting had merit, I’m completely embarrassed but our leader’s actions. It’s wildly unacceptable.

  6. Just be honest that they are committing war crimes and that they are not welcome to sit at the adult table until they clean up their act.

  7. Hasn’t the UK also just stopped renewing arms export licenses to Israel?

  8. And Hiroshima did. I actually think Japan handled this well. Both Israel and Palestine were invited, just to separate cities to avoid the distraction.

  9. A very ill-conceived decision by the US. Did Netanyahu dictate to Biden the text for their refusal to attend? Tail wagging the dog on this one. Japan is free to invite whomever they choose. Exceptionally bad form of the US to boycott a peace ceremony born of the two nuclear bombs dropped on Japan by Americans. The Japanese should be grossly insulted by this political idiocy.

  10. Who cares if the Yanks don’t show, it’s not as if they care much about peace anyway (bombed the city too)

  11. Julia Longbottom, the British Ambassador to Japan, stated that she would not attend because the exclusion of Israel could send a misleading message, equating Israel with Russia and Belarus, which were also not invited due to their roles in the Ukraine conflict.

Longbottom emphasized that Israel’s actions are seen as self-defense, unlike the aggressive actions of Russia and Belarus.

Rahm Emanuel, the US Ambassador to Japan, echoed similar sentiments, expressing that he did not want to support what he viewed as the politicization of the event by excluding Israel.

Emanuel will instead attend a separate event in Tokyo.

Nagasaki’s mayor, Shiro Suzuki, explained that the decision not to invite Israel was based on security concerns and the desire to maintain a peaceful and somber atmosphere during the ceremony.

Despite these explanations, the decision has been criticized by various quarters, including the Israeli ambassador to Japan, Gilad Cohen, who attended the Hiroshima peace ceremony earlier this week.

The exclusion of Israel has led to a broader diplomatic fallout, with other Western countries such as Australia, Italy, Canada, and the European Union also indicating lower-level representation at the Nagasaki ceremony.
Critics argue that inviting countries with significant human rights violations while excluding Israel sends a conflicting message about the event’s commitment to global peace and unity.

  12. Did the embassador get their feelings hurt?

    They sound like bitches
