4TH place no medal, 2 points; 5th place, no medal, 1 point.
It makes no sense that someone with 1 gold in the medal ranking is in front of a country with say, 0 gold and 10 silver medals.
At the end of the Olympics you would have a final ranking using this point system. It would also take away some of the stigma of the 4th place, in Italy we call it the “*medaglia di legno*”, wooden medal.
Maybe the point system could come with some perks for extra qualifying spots at the next Olympics (but the countries should be grouped in tiers I guess, as there is no point to compare sport superpowers vs. microstates).
Edit: edited for clarity.
Edit 2: reading a few replies, I’ve got to say that I underrated the fact that small countries can actually punch above their weight thanks to the gold medals being so important in the medal table. Sport superpowers will always be ahead in the total medals count or would be ahead even more in my “point ranking”. A small-ish country can leapfrog bigger countries with just a few golds.
Winning is winning so who cares what we win…or don’t.
The real champions
Canada is 4th again in this tally…..!
What is no-medal placement?
Where is the full list?

Each one is an incredible athlete, unlike the person who made the table.
France having that many close calls as well as being in the top 5 the whole time is really impressive, this has been a bumper crop of athletes and I wonder if they’ll ever be as successful again!
This would be a way to track who supports the overall belief of supporting all athletes and help them achieve their dreams of making the Olympics rather than focusing only on sports and athletes that will bear medals for some type of national patriotic bravado.
I love this!
please do it at the end of the olympics as well
I don’t see how this is “losing” tbh. Italy is number 8 in the medal table and all the countries getting 4th place a lot are also the ones winning a lot. The top “losers” of this table are also top winners in the regular table. 4th place at the Olympics is very good. You win against all but 3 other athletes in the world. There should be something like a fancy certificate and official recognition of 4th and 5th places IMO.
Ireland currently enjoying its best-ever games, with 4 golds and three bronzes propelling us to the dizzy heights of twelfth overall! Also a further 11 competitors who finished within the top ten of their particular category.
A surprising lot of easily recognized nations here.
Me and the missus were actually saying the other day how many Italians are participating, but not that many get to the podium. So here it is, white on blue!
We can’t even lose properly…
Sorry that us Spanish Beachers (Volleyball) are a part of no-medal placements. 2 5th places. We lost yesterday to medal favorites Canada (W) and Norway (M)
Spain doing so bad we cant even compete at the nonmedal category
Poooo popopopopoooo pooo
At least Spain IS in a way better position in this ranking than in the medal race. We need to fully improve fundings and training centers to begin earning the medals we as a country deserve

I don’t know if I have to be proud or super angry about it
Winning at losing.
When you’re trying your best to be proud…
Pays-Bas… Country-Down… (AKA The Netherlands) okay, how did i not know this.
I think there should be a point ranking, rather than medals.
GOLD: 10 points; SILVER: 5 points; BRONZE: 3 points;
