The process by which the german Bundespräsident is elected is somewhat nonstandard, and probably not exactly simple to parse for people not familiar with german politics. Since it’s still important for those with even a casual interest, I’ve put toegether this little (partial) fact sheet that should hopefully clear up the most important points in a relatively concise fashion.

I still find it funny that in the naturalisation test we ask how the Federal President is elected, as if most Germans knew that 😉
