Russia fights to hold back Ukrainian units in the Kursk region| DW News

Moscow says at least one thousand Ukrainian troops entered Russian territory on Tuesday. Officials in Kursk say around three thousand civilians have been evacuated, and a local state of emergency is in place. Ukraine has not officially confirmed it launched the attack, which is the biggest cross-border advance since the war began.

  6. I do not think it is only PR.

    I do not think it is only prep for the peace negotiations.

    I think the nuclear power facility taken off-line would be strategic.

    I think the ability to move rapidly southward along the Sorovikin line is a potential too, also strategic. IF the Ukraine can send a large marauding party from the north and attack all sides of the Russian defense, while being resupplied and covered all the way down. It is strategic.

    The Russians have manpower, artillery and guided munitions. The Ukrainians have got to be nimble, fast and close to the enemy where least expected.

    I think it is overall military genius against a mentally and physically clumsy foe.

  11. The reason makes sense. Since Putin is saying he will stop the fighting if the current lines are accepted (which Ukraine won’t accept without significant western pressure), therefore taking some Russian territory will prevent that narrative from being pushed towards westerners

  16. Shes not a good military analyst, well not in my book. The Ukrainians know what they are doing…it makes sense to not dance to the Russians tune but have them dance to yours. As Sun Tzu said 'know your enemy' and they do…hence the massive convoy destroyed killing maybe 480 troops today.

  17. Ukraine is just pushing Russia for full war…. Its look like to eer America, Russia will do a counter action which will be a full fledge war most probably in mid of October or beginning of November!!!

Brilliant move from Ukraine, in terms of peace negotiations defended land is the same as not defended land, every km of russian territory worth 2 times more for Putin than Ukraine's territory but costs 10 times less to take for Ukranians since there are no mines, no fortifications, no troops defending anything, they may even take Kursk and the nuclear plant, disrupting reinforcements to belgorod to encircle it. Russians will have to move a lot of troops from far away to stop Ukranians and stop their advance in Ukraine and even retreat to more secure positions, their offensive is virtually put on hold, they need 3 times more troops to advance in Ukraine since it's defended territory so Ukraine can spare the troops for this operation without compromising its defenses, in fact I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to do an incursion and gain a foothold in Crimea. Kiev is closer to this front than Moscu and so logistically they are much better position to do this, it's not even much more difficult to provide support for your army at your border than to support it 100km if the roads are clear, you get there in 2 hours, and if you reach Kursk the army could raid the city for supplies. The fastest they move the harder it will be for Russia to counter.

  19. The ~1000 Ukrainians are 150km? into Russia? They have our run their logistical supply lines. In another few days they run out of ammo, they run out of food. Their retreat route will be sealed off. All to take the news away from Gaza, away from Israel, away from Iran?

  30. Ukraine can’t continue to butt heads in a war of attrition against an opponent who has more men to sacrifice and doesn’t care about loosing them.
    Ukraine was correct to to attack where Russia was weakest. I am glad that this woman is not in charge of the Ukrainian Army.

  34. Ukraine is bringing the fight to a place where they have an advantage … Russian relief convoys are vulnerable because lack of a static defensive position … taking a lot of Russians out of the fight, and preventing them to do harm inside Ukraine.

  36. Weird to hear from Marina Miron that Russia has no goal to occupy Kyiv or Odesa but right now because of the Ukrainian attack on Russian soil Russia may rethink that. Actually, Russia wanted to occupy all of Ukraine including Odesa and Kyiv since day one and even never tried to hide that.
