‘Growth and dynamism’: Tuscan villages battle depopulation • FRANCE 24 English
The sale of houses in Italy for the symbolic sum of one euro has become a well-known way of attracting new inhabitants to remote villages. Now there is a new initiative in Tuscany: the region is offering a generous subsidy of up to 30,000 euros to anyone who would like to buy a house in one of its mountain villages. This includes foreigners: EU nationals and anyone who has had a resident permit for at least 10 years is eligible. Our correspondent in Italy tells us more.

Even Illegals dont wanna be there, no funding available sadly
as a tuscan from lucca (the province of the town of this video) i say that this subsidy is a waste of money. Only retirees who already want to move there will take it. These town can attract young people that can have children only by guaranteering good IT connection to attract IT workers.
Will they take a senior lady who will open a cat cafe?
I realize that Italy really wants young people to move in and reinvigorate the place, but there are many of us retirees who would love to move to pretty and peaceful villages and spend our life savings in their economy. Unfortunately, they set the economic bar for a retirement visa too high, even when you have enough savings to live and pay for your own health insurance.
In my country, government build academies, colleges, research facilities in rural areas to help boost local economy.
These houses seem perfect for Air b&b s. Why don’t people open them ? Tourism in Tuscany is pretty strong.
I would love to retire to Italy, but the country has some obstacles such as not having reciprocity with the U.S. on drivers licenses. Double taxation, Italy would get more retirees if they didn’t make it so hard. Change some things & we will come.
It's written nothing yall can do about it
Water Problem.
Airbnb is Better.
I think there is a missed opportunity for diversifying the economies in places like this. Why not try and attract retirees like Florida for example which helps to diversify their economy by providing services to that population and is not entirely dependent on seasonal tourism?
i don't want your gooberment subsidy, i want lower taxes. and no migrant squatters please come with money and hard work ethic.
I would love to live there, but seeing how living of your own farmland is really hard, especially there it would mean i would need to have some kind of job i can do there. And the whole problem of nobody being there means it will have to be something long-distance, on the internet. And just my luck, i am not great with computers…
We want to leave this country because of our corrupt government. This town is beautiful.
I will retire to Tuscan village!
This has been happening in rural USA for decades.
