Democracy Index 2021

  1. In my experience Azerbaijan is worse than Belarus but they are favored in some way. Or maybe cause they are not near Europe so people don’t know what’s going on there.

  2. Spain slipped from full democracy. The main reason is the inability to renew the council that oversees the judiciary. It requires a supermajority of 3/5, so it has not happened since 2018

The opposition has no incentive to let the government renew it as they consider the current members (which are operating in caretaker form) to be more aligned with their ideas

  3. Oh yeah, the ranking where we are considered a ‘flawed democracy’ because we have compulsory voting (well not really because it’s actually only mandatory to show up, not to vote), meaning they give us a terrible score in ‘political participation’ while we probably have the biggest voters turnout of Europe for each and every single election. Ridiculous to say the least.

  5. Im so fed up with the Nordics always beeing on top of these kind of indexes. Democracy, press feedom, happiness and yada yada. Its frikkin boring having to live in these so called well-functioning democratic societies. Its time for the Nordics to go Viking on the world again. That was fun…

  6. Classic Belgium being snubbed from being “full democracy” because we have “opkomstplicht”.

We require everyone that is eligble to vote, to show up at their respective voting registry. They can vote blank or choose not to vote at all, as long as they show up.

The economist doesn’t like that so they give us a 5/10 in political participation.

They also don’t like that most people who aren’t politicians don’t want to be a member of a political party, so they give us a a bit bellow 7 for political culture.

It’s a really biased metric if you ask me.

  7. Still fuming at how Canada and UK, with an unelected Upper House and a First Past the Post System, is considered a full democracy but somehow France (with two round voting and 2 fully elected houses) is not.

  8. Boy I sure do love living in almost peak democracy. The power truly belongs to the people and all the important shit being voted for by, once again, the people is truly liberating.

Man I sure do love democracy.

  9. How the fuck is Croatia so low? Oh, it was ruled by our own court that the leading party in our country is an organized crime organization and they still rule the country and can still run on elections.
