I didn’t know being a decent person was so dishonest.
Thanks millionaire pretty person who lives in a bubble, I had no idea!
people can say what they feel and not be judged the same day people can be who they are and not be judged.
someone going “I hate [insert group]” is going to be judged the same way they are judging that group.
I’m not going to judge you for saying you like apples more than orange, but I sure as shit am going to judge you for being homophobic.
what am I supposed to just sit there while someone views me as garbage?
Welcome to corporate genius
I would reframe the conversation as “how do we create an environment where people can be educated on why we hold these beliefs rather than just dogmatically repeating them”.
I also think there’s very little forgiveness in cancel culture. We don’t really offer people a road map on how to properly apologize and make things right. We just villainize and write people off versus trying to teach people to act more thoughtfully and compassionately.
Political correctness isn’t the issue, it’s the ways that we enforce these ideas that are imperfect.
Ahh fantastic, Twitter/X has already absorbed the article, reacted as expected and unpredictably realised her words were taken wildly out of context. Glad to know it’s Reddit’s turn now
Confused by some comments. You guys understand that she’s complaining about Melissa Barrera being fired for speaking out about Palestine, right? She’s not doing the right wing grift you guys seem to think she’s doing.
Why should you be able to say things and not be judged for it?
Oh… I really don’t think she wants the men around her to say what they feel…
That would be… not good.
When in life could people say what they feel and not be judged for it. I mean maybe white men. Lol. So I don’t know what people are talking about. Translation for political correctness is I want to say whatever I feel without any consequences.
With Ortega this probably stems from her ignorant statements regarding the writers on her Netflix show. She just wants to be an unchecked Hollywood star.
Well what is it that you want to say but can’t, Jenna?
Let’s be genuinely anti facist instead of repeating the same mistakes of the past because of fear or because we’re sure we cannot be wrong.
I remember in college when we had to debate on opposite sides of issues like “affirmative action”. Some people just couldn’t do it and that made me wonder if the could actually think for themselves; if their guru told them to commit some crime in the name of an ideology, would they question that command?
“we tried pretending to care, and now it feels disingenuous” lmao this article has come off as bizarre since I first saw it.
Even as a trans person I feel silenced by the overtly critical social zeitgeist lately. Over time I’ve come to realize it’s largely rage baiters, Russian bots and a select few with giant megaphones.
I think the more dangerous idea is letting the people who never cared all along backside into being rape apologist, misogynistic, transphobic twats.
While also feeling free to voice our opinions, make public mistakes that don’t ruin our lives and largely take back public discourse.
That NEVER is going to happen and probably shouldn’t happen. The fact is that if you have any real celebritry there are way too many people parsing your every word and trying to sniff out any bit of controversy that it would make living in the spotlighht almost impossible for them.
Honesty equals fun for fans and profit crisis managers and heartache for the famous and their families.
If scream was filmed in California, then the scream producers broke california law as it’s illegal to discriminate against someone based on political speech (so long as the speech occurred outside working hours).
I think this is a good law cause without it, it gives hollywood corporations way too much power over individuals controlling what they can say and do even outside of work hours. Its actually quite seeious too as studios can essentially push whatever political agenda they want (celebs have a lot of influence and the studios would control those influencers).
There is actually a court case against disney going on right now that is similar to the scream situation but instead of a left leaning person being penalized for their political speech as in scream, it was a right wing actress. I hope it confirms celebrities right to their freedom of speech during nonwork hours. studios (corporations) should not be able to control them (individuals) outside work regardless of if they lean right or left.
