   Emmanuel Macron may appoint a new prime minister next week as his self-imposed “Olympic truce” comes to a close.

   The French president announced last month that he was putting domestic politics on hold during [the Games](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/), fearing the chaos that has followed the [snap election](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/french-presidential-election/) in July would mar the competition.

   Since then, he has been shuttling between Paris and his presidential Riviera retreat as he seeks a consensus government leader neither from his centrist Renaissance party – considered a red rag to the opposition – nor New Popular Front (NFP), the Left-Green alliance that came to a surprise first in last month’s elections.

   Political commentators suggest that if no group manages to form a stable governing coalition in the coming months, the president may well have to [dissolve parliament next June](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/12/12/macron-told-to-dissolve-parliament-after-migrant-bill-fail/) – he must wait a year – and call for fresh legislation elections.

   Le Figaro, the French newspaper wrote: “If that fails, the question of (his) resignation will raise its head at the pinnacle of state.”
