Abortion is legal. Trying to harass women who make that difficult choice to try shame or guilt trip them at an already distressing time shouldn’t be allowed. End of.
Abortion zone buffers are crucial, and I’m relieved that the UK is implementing them. If anti-abortion people didn’t want that to happen, they simply needed to be more respectful of people attending medical appointments at abortion clinics. Their choice to be shitty to medical professionals and people trying to attend appointments with their doctors is the reason this has been necessary.
I’m gonna start a protest movement for some other random medical procedure that’s also none of my business and doesn’t affect me in any way if someone gets it done.
I’m thinking… tooth extraction. TOOTH EXTRACTION IS AMORAL AND AGAINST GODS WILL. Who’s with me? Lets make some signs and go and stand outside some dentists.
Abortion is legal in the UK, and those seeking one and the staff at these centres should be able to go about it free from harassment and intimidation. Buffer zones need to be strictly enforced with consequences for the self righteous transgressors.
There’s a lot of money funding anti-abortion groups and lobbyists in the UK coming from American right wing christian groups. More foreign money being used to interfere and cause disharmony with our society, needs to be cut out.
Abortion requires some deep thought. In some circumstances I can understand it. But in other circumstances I cannot understand at all.
To me, there’s no nuance here. It’s a free speech issue, unfortunately and I can never support the side which wants to restrict free speech.
Anti abortion activists should not have abortions – that is their choice. I find it massively offensive that they attempt to impose their bigoted point of view on the general population. They are a really horrible intolerant bunch of people – an embarrassment to the rest of humanity.
To use the current quote , which applies here: “Mind your own goddamn business!”
It’s bizarre that this is seen as some sort of question around freedom of speech or freedom of belief rather than a discussion about how to stop a bunch of extremists from terrorising vulnerable women who need urgent healthcare.
If you believe that abortion is immoral, that’s acceptable. You’re wrong, but you’re allowed to be wrong. If you believe that your God bans you from getting abortion, that’s fine. Don’t get an abortion.
But the moment you try to inflict your religion on other people who don’t necessarily share your religion, you’re crossing a line.
Expressing your views is allowed. Campaigning to ban abortion is allowed (you’re a cunt, but you’re allowed to be a cunt). But harassing, threatening and assaulting medical staff or women who need a medical procedure is not.
We should treat these arseholes like the criminals they are.
> “The implementation of buffer zones around the country is a step backwards for freedom of movement, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to pray,” she said. “We can’t criminalise the mere presence of people,” she added.
You actually can criminalise the mere presence of people. It’s why trespass laws exist. And believe it or not, you’re still welcome to your views and to pray. You’re just to stop harassing women on what’s likely one of the worst days of her life, or people who work at these clinics and offer a number of services, not just abortion.
One wonders how this Christian group would feel and react if a bunch of satanists were protesting outside their churches and buildings.
Abortion is healthcare and an immensely hard decision to make. It leaves scars. Even if it is the right thing to do. Those who harass mothers who have to make this decision can go to hell. Surely if it were convenient they’ll get an abortion (cue that lawmaker that voted against abortion in USA and gave money to his mistress to get one). It’s simple – don’t agree with abortion, don’t get one.
Those nurses are closer to being god than any imaginary sky man they believe in lol
It’s not a “battle zone”…. its tory right wing BS from that despicable excuse of a human Cruella Braverman who refused to implement the law, as Home Secretary, ignoring the will of parliament and an 80% majority in support of pro-choice in the UK
This is a right wing, religious based battle and they can f**k right off…..
I used to live in Ealing. These bastards used to protest outside the abortion clinic all the time until a buffer zone was put in place, one of the first in the country I think. Thank god for that, these women should be able to access these services without being harassed.
Fully support the buffer zone. These people who try to impose their own views on other peoples bodies make my blood boil. To the pro-life activisist – if you don’t agree with abortion, then don’t have one. But don’t dare think you have a right to force a woman to endure a pregnancy, birth and raising a child that she has decided she doesn’t want or is not ready for.
>“Protests are supposed to be disruptive and shouldn’t be forced to move to make them easy to ignore”
>“We should have anti-protest buffer zones that stops protests from being disruptive and makes them easy to ignore”
Pick one. You don’t get to scream “protests should be disruptive and inconvenient” to defend protests you like, while also supporting laws that stop protests you don’t like from being disruptive and inconvenient.
If they _are_ harassing people then these buffer zones aren’t necessary – you can prosecute them for harassment or literally any of the applicable public order offences.
These buffer zones aren’t to stop harassment, they’re to stop otherwise legal protest from inconveniencing people… but protest is supposed to be inconvenient, isn’t it?
We should find out how these protesters are and harass them when they’re getting medical treatment. Richard needs an ingrowing toenail removed? Stalk him and tell him all nails matter. Block him from getting into the podiatrist.
Honestly what a ludicrous situation. Just arrest them all for harassment.
I mean, this new law is trumpeted as a great thing but surely is 150m is not enough. Should be at least 500m
Abortion is and should always be an option. I kind of agree the cut off point should be around 20 weeks because that is when brain function seems to suggest self awareness but this is simply a matter of how long, not that abortion should be a legal choice.
Buffer zones are a good idea and that they are necessary is pathetic.
I wonder if GBeebies support these buffer zones, considering they were so outraged about the protests occuring outside reform UK’s headquarters
>“If the buffer zone had been in place I would have gone to the clinic on that day and definitely I would have [had an] abortion.
“I would not have my daughter today and she is my best friend.”
Well yeah of course it works out fine if you’re just magically given accommodation and financial support by antiabortion fairies. Where the hell did that money come from? And can they afford to support **all** the people terminating for financial reasons? What about the people who already have some kids and just can’t stretch to another, are they going to fund the extra child for 18 years? Cough up for the renovations on the house or a whole house move for the extra bedroom? Fund the after school activities? Not to mention that finance is just one of many reasons that people terminate.
If you partake in a “protest” of this nature, I hope nothing but pain, misery and loneliness on you, that is all you deserve.
If you want to believe in stories made up by bronze age desert tribes, you do you, but don’t you dare make it my fucking problem.
They should start fining them large amounts of money for every infraction, and explicitly say that that money goes directly into funding reproductive healthcare and abortions.
It’s a right to free speech that we value, not a right to intimidate or harass. The right place for a protest about abortion law is outside Parliament or your local MP’s office, not the clinics where the staff and patients have a right to medical privacy.
