  1. Vladimir Putin abruptly interrupted an acting regional governor who said Ukraine’s military had taken control of 28 towns and villages in Russia’s Kursk border region, prompting a sixth of its population to flee.

Alexey Smirnov said Ukrainian forces had penetrated at least 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) into the region and controlled a border area 40 kilometers wide before Putin cut him off at a televised meeting with defense officials on Monday, saying this was a matter for the military to assess.

“You can tell us about the socio-economic situation and about helping people,” Putin told Smirnov, who went on to list assistance provided to more than 120,000 residents he said had left their homes in the region, with about 60,000 more waiting to be evacuated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged the scale of the intervention in a video report from his war cabinet posted on Telegram on Monday. Army Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi told the president “as of now nearly 1,000 square kilometers of Russian Federation territory are under our control” and that offensive operations are continuing in the Kursk region.

Putin said the Russian Defense Ministry’s main task was to “drive out the enemy from our territories and, together with the Border Service, ensure reliable protection of the state border.”

He admitted fighting could spread further in Russia, telling the governor of neighboring Bryansk region that if things were calm there now “it doesn’t mean the situation will remain the same tomorrow.”

Ukraine would continue attacks to try to destabilize the political situation in the country, Putin said. The government in Kyiv was attempting to stop Russia’s offensive in eastern Ukraine and was “striving to improve its negotiating positions in the future,” he said.

Russia has sent reinforcements to try to quell Ukraine’s surprise cross-border attack, the first time since World War II that a foreign military has taken control of part of its territory. It’s the biggest assault within Russia since Putin ordered the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine that was supposed to end within days and is now well into its third year.

“The Russians have been severely embarrassed,”said Matthew Savill, military sciences director at the Royal United Services Institute in London. Still, “sustaining a force of any size in Russia, and defending against counter-attacks, will be hard, given the limited reserves available” to Ukraine.

  2. just like Hitler, Putin does not want to hear bad news. That is why he surround himself with yes-man.

    Truth hurt doesn’t it?

  3. Well it was not that bad. In this particular case headline sounds way more aggressive. It was more like “hey, stick to the civilian topics and leave military reports for military to do”. All the televised interviews are a theater in muscovia, so this might have been also ranged, to show that Emperor is in control and nobility are the ones who are incompetent.

  4. It’s hilarious that these guys try and portray a “tough guy” look, but they’re actually the biggest pussies in every situation they’re involved in.

  5. Those people on the photo look like they are not sure whether they are victims or not.

  6. Ah sweet love it when people link articles that require a subscription

  7. Come on now. Putin prioritizes messaging and symbolism, over competence and handling actual business. So much so that Ukraine is able to take a thousand square miles of Russia in a week. And yet they can’t even get the messaging right?

So what is it, you say, ya do here?

  8. So, here’s a fun thought.

It’s only a few days ago that Russia attempted to cut off Signal, blocked YouTube and other things.

Not only doesn’t Putin want to hear good news, but it seems the timing of these events means that Putin is very affraid that anyone should get their information on this twist of the war from anyone that Putin doesn’t approve of.

Are things worse for Putin and his men than they are letting on?

  9. He may want to avoid clear, odorless liquids for a while.

  10. The dominos have been falling, it’s just a really long domino line

  11. Hit crimea….. Hit it hard. Make them choose what they want more. Kursk or crimea

  12. I remember a 40k story like this. This hive city had a battle going on outside, and it was getting closer, but every day, a speaker was assuring people it was fine even when plague marines were raiding apartment blocks.

That was 40k, where the imperium of man is seen as an absolute extreme of totalitarianism to the point of absurdity.

  13. Putin cuts off Governor dick who admitted Ukraine advancing in Russia should be the true news.

  14. Do you reckon they take bets in Russia on what window it’s gunna be ?
