Stop blaming women for falling birth rates

  1. Falling birth rates are a good thing in the long run.

It would be far better for the environment to have less people. The human population is still growing pretty fast, by around 83 million extra people per year. The population can’t keep on growing indefinitely and it’s already so big that many other species don’t have sufficient space for their habitats.

  2. Who’s blaming women???! Takes two and all that…

Anyway, probably good that birth rates are falling in terms of the world being a bit saturated with humans at this point. There were only 2,000,000,000 people on the planet 100 years ago. To have nearly four times that in 2021 is completely unsustainable.

  3. No-one is really blaming women. I mean you can always find a few loons with any crazy opinion that you can think of, but I don’t see why they need rebutting in the NS or anywhere else.

And while I’m sure the cost of housing and living is a factor, I doubt it’s the whole story as is being presented. I think more people are just deciding that they don’t want children as well, and they are feeling less social pressure to conform.

  4. Journalism must be so easy. “Stop doing this thing nobody is actually doing but you’d be outraged if they did!”

  5. A fantastic con has gone on somewhere. We’re working more than ever. Women are waiting till later in their lives to have children. But we’re not swimming in cash. We’re being fucked in the ass I think.

  6. Who’s blaming women? It’s got more to do with the rising cost of living and climate change. I don’t want children personally, but if I did those would certainly be factors to make me consider if it was a good idea.

  7. I thank them for falling birth rates. Its a good thing more people are seeing how shit of a deal reproducing is, especially nowadays

  8. The blame is put on young people, not just women. Sure, women carry the child to term but men are still expected to raise the child and provide for it financially (we’re very much stuck in the heteronormative past with that attitude). Outside of one article yesterday, I have only ever seen the blame placed on young people for not getting themselves into debt and adding strain to their relationship by having a child at the wrong time.

  9. Judging by the male to female ratio on tinder, it’s definitely not the men holding up this process.

Why can’t all the women just be compliant, forget financial and social responsibility and just make babies.

  10. At this point, having a child with a partner means A) making one of the most expensive life choices it’s possible to make while simultaneously B) giving up around half your income.

If both parents return to full-time work after the baby is born then that means paying for full-time childcare, which is going to wipe out most of one partner’s earnings or could even potentially eclipse them altogether, depending on what their job is.

Economically speaking, the UK is set up to punish people for having children. No wonder fewer people are choosing to do so.

  11. Why blame. Anyone with a brain can see the planet is struggling because of us breeding like rabbits on a global scale.

  12. This seems an idiotic article to me…typical click bait. Fact is there are many reasons why the birth rate is falling. Income, expenditure..and yes changes in working patterns will be part of it. Its the way it is. Its not blaming women it’s stating facts. We, as a society, are going to have to reverse this falling birthrate sooner or later. But its not a person or group of peoples fault. We need structures to support people to have children but accept that it isn’t for all. It isnt for me or my partnerfor example…we are a generation that likes it’s freedom after all. Maybe we will have children older.

  13. Who every is responsible, they are doing a great job. Too many people on the planet as proved by the pandemic and global warming.

  14. I see a lot of comments on this topic saying things around how less women want children “these days” and all I can think is that the amount of women wanting children probably hasn’t decreased it’s just sadly a lot of women back in the day just didn’t have a choice 🙁

  15. Falling birth rates?

Almost as if several decades of stagnant wages, skyrocketing costs of living and ridiculously expensive housing will convince people to not have children.

  16. Blame collapsing death capitalism for the fall in birth rates. Honestly people blaming women or young couples in general should look at the hellscape their actions created.

  17. Earth is pretty packed as it is ffs. So many people around the world are already below the poverty line, starving, cold and sick. I think we can hold off on kids for 2 or so decades to help Earth last longer and hopefully get closer to solving those crisises..

  18. Who is blaming women for falling birth rates. I think most people realise how expensive it is to have kids. The old saying of only the rich and poor can afford kids is very true.

  19. The tories have spent years blaming people who “can’t afford children but have more” for society’s problems, and now they’re pissed off about the falling birth rate? Fucking idiots.

  20. Why is the article titled “Stop blaming women for falling birth rates” when it gives no evidence of anyone or anything blaming women? It doesn’t give any examples of how this could be stopped either. The article is just a very poor summary of the author’s opinions on why birth rates are falling.

  21. Who’s blaming women for having less babies? I think that’s great news!! Well done ladies. There’s far too many people on the planet so you’re doing us all a favour!

  22. Not like this hasn’t already been a post, but you have to ask yourself, why?

Why would I give up my career to stay home for 2-3 years because I can’t afford childcare?

Why would I have a child in shared accommodation because I can’t afford to buy or rent somewhere appropriate?

Why would I have a child when the reality is, my job will leave me marking and planning lessons most evenings and sometimes weekends?

  23. Falling birth rates are due to wealth being hoarded by the few…low paying jobs and rampant increases in property and goods prices. If you can’t afford to live a basic life you don’t plan for a child…

  24. IMO we have created a society where you need two people working to be able to afford the same lifestyle as it took 1 wage earner around 60 years ago.

So how are we supposed to have children if to have children you need money that you can only get from 2 average wages.

Many people can’t even afford a house, never mind a child.

  25. I love how every time someone mentions population at all, a horde of people who have been fed Eco-fash talking points about how we’re overpopulated and can’t support our population and how we need to reduce it anyway.

The problem is not the number of people. If Thanos were to delete the poorest half of the population, it would put a mere 10% dent in carbon emissions, and similarly tiny changes to other environmental damage. The richest 1% of the population is responsible for more than double that. The richest 10% (Which mind you, it need be remarked includes anyone on earth with a wage of £27k or higher) are responsible for a staggering 52%. We could delete 90% of the population and bring the population down to less than 1 billion and cut emissions by less than half (obviously, the total chaos and societal collapse this would cause would probably cut emissions even further by proxy, but you understand the point). Similarly, we would still be destroying habitats, poisoning the planet, dumping plastic shit into the oceans etc. We’d inevitable be destroying the planet on a smaller scale and thus over a longer time span, certainly, but that has in no way solved the problem.

The problem is not the number of people. The problem is the economic system we live under, which prioritises Greed through exploitation and quick profits over the wellbeing of humans and animals alike. The problem is a system which underfunded public transportation and is obsessed with car ownership to the point that our cities are designed not to be walked in by humans, but drove around in by cars, so that people need to travel miles to get to what they need. The problem is a system that allows the rich to peddle misinformation and denialism so that they can keep sucking up oil profits for a little longer, even if this miss filling our oceans with plastic and choking our atmosphere with co2.

It is a myth that the problem is population, it is a distraction that is intended to prevent us from addressing the actual problems and to justify the racist and classist measures fascists are itching to impose on society. Think about it for a moment, when they whisper about shrinking the population and cutting down on the birth rate, just how do you think they will do that – and just who do you think are going to end up being the target of their methods? Do you think the end game for that position is that they are going to ask politely and people will just stop having kids, or that they will address the economic and material problems (which they are eager not to mention) that lead to high birth rates?
