This Twitter User argues, that by capturing Sudzha Ukrainian Intelligence has made a significant breakthrough in Russian logistics. The station’s strategic importance lies in its connection to Russian railway systems. By gaining control of Sudzha, Ukrainian forces may have acquired near-real-time access to Russian railway computer systems, schedules, train compositions, and internal communications, which are critical for Russian logistics.
The Sudzha station is part of the Moscow Railway division, which plays a key role in Russia’s transport infrastructure. The fact that Ukraine might now monitor Russian logistical movements in real-time could cause considerable concern within the Russian command.
Moreover, many of the railway’s automated systems, such as defect detectors and signal sensors, cannot be easily deactivated without significant disruption to both passenger and freight services. Even if Russian forces were to lose computer access, Ukrainian intelligence might still exploit radio frequencies to monitor these systems. This means Russia cannot simply “shut off” the system to prevent Ukrainian access.
“Also, a lot of those systems transmit via radio automatically. They are tripped when a train goes by. So even if they lost access to the computer, they would now have the frequencies needed to listen in on those sensors and detectors. Which again you physically can’t turn off unless you go out there and rip them apart which they’re not going to do. The systems are designed so that the train out in the middle of nowhere has an ability to know if they are safe and to know what’s in front of them and what’s behind them. ”
Additionally, Sudzha is not just a railway hub but also the administrative center of the region, potentially housing valuable intelligence. Ukrainian forces were able to capture this location with minimal casualties and damage, likely before Russian forces could destroy sensitive documents. This situation makes Sudzha a critical intelligence asset for Ukraine.
The French might be interested in that.
Could be and it would be nice.
But railways are organized very hierarchical like an army.
So you have train numbers and a timetables/train paths for each separate train
and if something is happens the locomotive driver may ask the dispatcher and
then he has to wait and in general only to react.
The German term for propulsion command is “Fahrbefehl” an “order to drive”.
So it could be that the Sudzha station has no access to the train dispatchers desk
of the Yugo-Vostochnaya Railway at all.
However there may be the right (data) network connection to break into the dispatcher’s network.
This network connection can probably be bridged via cellular network to somewhere else.
So it could also be enough to connect this endpoint to the internet
and short time later interested people from China, Ukraine, …
will try to find out what is possible there.
It’s kinda spoiling
This is all so much fun!
I would think that it would be possible to disable access to that network remotely and prevent Ukraine from using it?
HIMARS arriving on platform 4 in 18 seconds
Wonder if you could scramble the schedule. It would take years to recreate it
They probably could already see what’s happening. With AI and satellite tech I’d imagine that very little of what RU does goes unseen.
What if the russians bomb the train station which contains the logistics info
Satellites and the internet could do this.
It’s pretty overwrought. You don’t need a train station to hear track defect detectors if they’re being radio broadcast. In the US, such detectors send their signals over the same 40 radio channels that the railroads use for voice communications. Not to mention that it’s trivial to remove a node from a network.
