In the 19th century, when Mexico was ruled by Austrian emperor Maximilian von Habsburg and his wife Charlotte of Belgium, the Imperial comittee (composed, mostly, of Germans, Czechs and Frenchmen) brought to Mexico, among many other things, three Central European music genres that would have a profound impact in Mexican culture: polka, schottische and redowa.
The popularity of these genres would solidify by the arrival of small waves of Central European immigrants (including the Mennonites) who kept playing these genres on Mexican saloons and community gatherings.
Polka (and derived genres like norteño, banda, sierreño, duranguense, corrido, etc) is extremely popular in Mexico. It is associated with Northern Mexico and Mexican cowboy culture in general.
These genres are mainstream here, so there's like artists making albums, people go to concerts of these genres and stuff like that. Is it like that in Germany too?
Here are some examples:
– This is how it is traditionally danced here. The costumes are traditional Northern Mexican attire. (https://youtu.be/15y0USnogY8?si=SXfqbDfkPZCzRAtT)
– This is a "norteño" classic, from the 90s. One of my favorites (https://youtu.be/JqgRE88HOeo?si=ODS7qnlK7h-hoWSc).
– This is a "banda" song, also derived from Central European genres, but it is a separate genre from norteño (https://youtu.be/03j7wTQm7KQ?si=eB9AjV6nN6HxVa45).
– This is a traditional "corrido", a story-telling kind-of song. They usually tell stories about battles, important figures, historic events, etc. (https://youtu.be/oP2icYDQxL4?si=TkFGUph2DwSWEIEG).
– This is a "narcocorrido", which is a type of corrido that tells stories related to Mexican Cartels, describe all sort of crimes, idolize important criminals, etc. Kinda like gangster rap (https://youtu.be/br1WP-TOi6M?si=lGPr3RBHEU0e7aG6).
– This is a "corrido tumbado", which is basically a corrido mixed with pop, trap and other more contemporary genres. That's what's popular atm here in Mexico, alongside reggaetón and English music (https://youtu.be/lZiaYpD9ZrI?si=lhQMC2z8I2jTLkm-)
