  1. If that is the case, then Ukraine should easily take as much territory as possible, hold “elections” and expand their own territory. I mean, Putin wanted to export the Russian way and there is no more Russian than that.

  2. Perfect recipe for opening up multiple fronts on the war. With Russia’s already significant losses of their best soldiers, take advantage of the poorly guarded borders / regions and open up multiple fronts to force Russia to send their remaining “best” back into Russian territory leaving the Ukraine fronts more open to counter attack.

  3. That is the whole army. Sad country. Cares zero for their citizens. You guys are fucked for so many generations in the future

  4. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-soldier-russia-troops-kursk-kids-mandatory-service-wsj-2024-8) reduced by 84%. (I’m a bot)

    > Ukraine's military released a teaser video and telegraphed about its intention months in advance.

    > Writing in a Telegram post on Friday, Russian military expert Vladislav Shurygin said Russian commanders had ignored intelligence that Ukraine was preparing to attack and failed to initiate defense protocols.

    > Rainer Saks, an Estonian security expert, told ERR that the Ukrainian invasion of Kursk had been successful "Mainly due to the fact that the Russian military command and political leadership were completely unprepared for this kind of event.”

  5. Yep, that tracks.

Current Russian law prohibits conscripts from officially being deployed out of country, so that makes sense that a majority and the unfit are used for border duties to free up contract soldiers.

I know Putin doesn’t give a f about the law, but I guess he has to keep up some appearances for the domestic audience.

  6. I see we’ve hit the “Hitler Youth” stage of the three-day special military operation. Lovely.

  7. If you look at the POWs they are all super young nerdy types you’d expect in a college calculus course. I wasn’t surprised they surrendered

  8. Now would be a good time for China to take back Northern Manchuria

  9. I have zero military strategy chops, but it seems to me they’d loop behind the troops in Ukraine and cut them off from their logistics support. Again, not a brilliant military strategist but curious if that could be what’s what.

  10. Ukraine needs to march all the way to Moscow and ask where their 30,000+ kids went.

  11. What is lovely is that, unlike the front lines of Ukraine, these guys don’t have Chechens standing behind them, threatening to mow them down if they retreat or surrender. So these guys are retreating and/or surrendering like it’s going out of style. And these are young, healthy, well-fed, good-looking boys from at least the lower middle class (or what passes for it in Russia). These aren’t alcoholic, AIDS-ridden ex-cons that nobody cares about. These are the pride and joy of their families. These have amazing trade value.

And while the country bumpkins fleeing the region will not be allowed to go to Moscow and raise a fuss, they will be intercepted and redirected to out of the way places where they can’t be seen or heard, what they can’t do is stop the parents of those boys, who are already living in the area, from raising a stink. And more importantly, now parents of all the other boys, who are similarly stationed all around Ukraine, are going to be worried sick and making any move possible to relocate them. What used to be a safe and cushy way to wait out the 18-month mandatory service (or however long conscription is these days, it was 2 years in my time), it’s suddenly turning into a nightmare.

So internally there’s going to be some movement now. These weren’t rich kids, those are either out of the country already, or paid off instead of serving. But these aren’t the usual Wagnerite syphilitic zeks either. These aren’t disposable. Putin can’t throw away even a thousand of these, probably, without some serious lashback from bereaved parents that have nothing to lose.
