“kneecapping the Republican Party” looks suspiciously like allowing the majority of this country to govern itself as it sees fit, while ignoring a minority of backwater yahoos who need to get their asses in gear and join us in the 21st century.

R’s have cut themselves off through decades of terrible legislation and ruling from the bully pulpit. They lost nearly 1m supporters from Covid-19 deaths and continue to enact legislation to advance a shrinking base and outdated philosophy. Now, they’re supporting Project 2025 and have doubled down on their racist agenda. It’s time to set this party to rest. People deserve better.

The Republican party kneecapped itself the moment they tied their entire movement to the fate of a twice impeached convicted felon who tried to overturn an election.
In other words, the public knows the end stage of the plan (Trump’s Project 2025) and Republicans know the corruption they’ve spend decades building in will come tumbling down unless Trump wins and implements the New American Kingdom.

What I have learned from Republicans is that if we engage in the same behaviors they do we are “kneecapping them,” if we make things more fair we are “kneecapping them,” if we end gerrymandering we are “kneecapping them,” if we end the electoral college we are “kneecapping them”.
Basically if we do popular policy for the average America we are “kneecapping them?”

* Expand the SC to 13.
* Pass a binding code of ethics for the SC, to be adjudicated by a panel of Federal District Judges or by a subset of the House.
* Mandate an 18 year term for SC justices.
* New Voting Rights Act. Specify auditable paper ballots and scientific random sampling as a check against fraud, guarantee ballot access, put Federal oversight on voter registration purges, specify how many polling places you must have based on precinct population.
* Illegalize gerrymandering. Specify non-partisan external mapping boards for all 50 (52? LOL) states. Specify metrics, so that representation must fall within some delta of voting share. So if 55% of the state is Democrat you can’t sent 4 R and 2 D House members to Washington. This is all pretty well worked out and understood, you just have to enforce it.
* Put legislation in place to secure elections. No more insurrectionists as election officials, close all those loopholes. Pass Federal legislation that overrides any state laws about leeway for election officials to steal or clog up elections. Make it a 20 year Federal prison term. Take it seriously. This has been a huge stress test of our rules and norms, and we can’t leave any of these gaps in place. If Trump doesn’t steal this election we can’t leave any holes for the next, smarter, guy to do it.
Do all of these immediately, in the first 100 days. Don’t wait.
* Try for two new states, sure. But that’s a longer term project.
His worst fears are DC and Puerto Rico statehood, i.e. representative democracy.
Mitch is talking about PR and DC statehood like they’re a guaranteed four Senate seats for Democrats, but in reality Puerto Rico would be more of a swing state.
DC has more people than Vermont and Wyoming, and Puerto Rico would be the 32nd most populous state after Iowa, so it really isn’t gaming the system any more than Republicans already are by having two Dakotas.
