Global drug laws can be traced back to a small group of conserative American men

  1. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar Left, and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black. But by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.”

  2. Tiny group of old rich white dudes making decisions that negatively affect most of the planet? I’m shocked, SHOCKED I say!

  3. UK drugs minister Victoria Atkins, who refused to reclaisfy cannabis form a class B to class C, is married to the UK’s largest cannabis grower for export, Paul Kenward.

  4. It’s a delicious irony that arch-consevative and racist Walt Disney’s Disneyland is a Mecca for hallucinogenic trippers. The amount of giggling joyful trippers having fun in the park among clueless tourists is hilarious.

The whole park is a visual and aural wonderland for trippers and it’s completely safe.

  5. What happened to the Garda superintendent with all the weed?

Nothin I guess, probably wasn’t really weed at all , and bet most of it just evaporated

  6. It’s shameful how we in a supposed developed nation treat our most vulnerable. Frank Feighan is a dinosaur, he’s clueless and has proven himself incompetent and ignorant time and again. What good does criminalising a person for small amounts of drugs do?

There’s been multiple large drug seizures reported in the media in the last few days. None of these seizures will impact price, quality, potency or availability of these substances. Drugs like cocaine and MDMA are cheaper, of purer quality and more readily available than ever before. The gardai parade the drugs as if they’ve had a massive victory, when in fact they’ve taken a drop out of the ocean.

Successive FG & FG governments have ignored this issue. I hope a more progressive voter base will eliminate these outdated politicians.

  7. “Anslinger took his anti-drugs mission to the United Nations, along with his unintelligent arguments, and won. Several conventions, such as the 1931 Narcotics Limitations and the 1936 Convention for Suppression of Illicit Traffic.”

The United Nations did not exist before 1945, after the second world war ended.

  8. Somebody has been reading Johann Hari’s book “Chasing the Scream”. She could at least credit him with the hypothesis. The book was published as Hari’s comeback from his own plagiarism scandal.

  9. It isn’t shocking:

“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people,” former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman told Harper’s writer Dan Baum for the April cover story published Tuesday.

“You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities,” Ehrlichman said. “We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news.
