wait… that only happened JUST now? How were they not banned years ago after Ukraine used their social media to blow them all to hell???
The two reasons I see here:
* Russian comsec is so awful they are literally being targeted for dumb social media posts.
* Russian lies are so ridiculous they don’t want to have to compete with the entire internet.
Considering what your average Mobik is like, I’m guessing this can only be enforced by beatings and rape inside the ranks.
Did they *just* realize they’re in a war or something?
Having seen photos of Russian commanders using cell phones, I’m gonna guess their military coms are as broken as what the US had in Grenada – one soldier had to use a phone card to call their base to arrange artillery support.
What, not more TikToking Chechens?
I’m very surprised they hadn’t already done this.
Their army of 18 year old alcoholics is totally going to stop hanging on their phones. I feel like the Ukrainian army might have a solution for that.
There goes most of their comunica capabilities.
Seems a few years too late but… Okay

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://novayagazeta.eu/articles/2024/08/12/last-call-en) reduced by 82%. (I’m a bot)

> Despite smartphones having unsurprisingly become as indispensable to modern warfare as they have to most other spheres of life, new legislation signed into law by Vladimir Putin on Thursday allows commanding officers to punish subordinates caught using their smartphones on the front line in Ukraine by confining them to the guardhouse for up to 10 days.
> "Due to the previous well-documented shortcomings of the Russian Defence Ministry in providing the army with reliable internet and telecommunications, smartphones have become the most important communication tool between units at the front," wrote Dmitry Rogozin, propagandist and "Senator" representing the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine.
> The Krapiva automated command and control system used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to coordinate its various units and brigades allows Ukrainian servicemen to receive real-time data on the battlefield situation as well as the enemy's location, according to the Russian officer.

They already did this a month ago. Doing it again this time with feeling
Funny the punishment is being taken off the front lines and being confined to a guard house for 10 days.
!remind me 1 month
“Entire Russian battalion caught using phones for the second time in 11 days”
this is helping Ukraine even more imo.
Brilliant news, russia will keep ruining what pathetic communication they have via telegram while their troops will continue to smuggle phones into the front to complain at the lack of supplies, water etc.
My recollection was that many Russian troops were getting killed because they were constantly giving their positions away via their smartphones. The fact that they didn’t ban them earlier probably indicates that their communication networks were so terrible that they HAD to use smartphones to talk to each other, even though they knew how compromising that was.
They’re absolutely worried that the incursions will persist and absolutely drain what is left of morale and order. Better for them that their soldiers in Ukraine have no clue that Russia can’t defend its borders.
It only took how many years for these super-hackers to catch on to that one?
I’ve always admired Russia for their evil brilliance (/s), but on this one…. Hmmmmm
Now we just need to send them digital cameras…
They are not gonna like that
So troops will have no way to communicate with each other now. I doubt they have enough military-grade communication hardware for the conscripts.
Even soldiers in wartime are too glued to their phones to fight!
/s
Too many people filming their war crimes
Yea right, first you need discipline soldiers.
Awwwww……no more Tik Tok Army uploads?!?!
I guess making tiktoks during marches were causing problems
What? They banned smart phones several times, Russian soldiers just don’t give a shit.
“It’s a bold strategy Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for him.”
10 days in the guardhouse is 10 days of not getting shot at…
While it’s fun to insult Russia, I’m a little bit surprised that banning personal electronics isn’t normal for deployment. Leaky civilian electronics make extremely efficient methods of pinpointing exact locations of troops and tracking their movement.
I wonder how long it will take them to realize they probably need to do the same thing for their forces that are in Russia.
Lol, took em this long to figure out opsec?
