What Brits and Americans recognize as a loaf of bread isn’t quite the same as toasting bread. Toasting bread is slightly smaller, all the better to fit an average toaster, and is made to toast crisply and evenly.
This isn’t the same as the bread sold in German supermarkets as “sandwich bread”, which is more similar to American bread. It’s slightly larger, but it doesn’t toast so well — I mean, it will fit into the toaster, but it tends to toast only on the surface, leaving the inside soft, which is why it’s more difficult to butter.

When is everyone gonna realise that making your own bread is literally as easy as making your own coffee, albeit it takes a few hours longer? People go on about bread making as though it’s some kind of mystical skill that only the Germans have figured out the means to harness. Flour, water, yeast and salt combined with a few optional extras. Abroca-fucking-dabra!!!
The reason no one gives a sht in the UK is because they go into the bakery to savour the delights of cornish pasties, eccles cakes, cheese and onion pasties, Chelsea buns, Bakewell tarts, Pork pies, scones, Victoria sponge cake and Madeira cake. Who the hell is gonna be worrying about bread when you have all that to choose from? Lord have mercy.

In fact… the American isn’t wrong. Not that American bread is any good — it isn’t — but what he says is perfectly correct.
