Butrón Castle, Spain.

  1. Butrón is a castle located in Gatika, in the province of Biscay, in northern Spain.

It dates originally from the Middle Ages, although it owes its present appearance to an almost complete rebuilding begun by Francisco de Cubas (also known as Marqués de Cubas) in 1878.

The castle has a fairy-tale look about it inspired by Bavarian castle models. The present building was created as a hobby for its then owner and to create something which is visually spectacular rather than to produce something in which people could actually live.

It fell into disuse and was later renovated and opened to the public. This proved to be unsuccessful and the building was closed to visitors although the grounds remained open.

  2. Someone needs to hand the keys to a power-washing addict for some time…

Out of interest: Does anybody know how quickly discoloring „patinas“ like this built up originally (to a degree that’s clearly visible – but not to an extreme black as this)? Years? Decades? Centuries?

  3. I hear it’s been recently sold to a big real-estate conglomerate and some renewing will soon be underway.

  4. Hey is near me, when it was open years ago people could get marry there. Even my parents look that option, but discarded due to the little space inside (yo need to make a tent outside to eat).

We have always thought how sad is that nobody buys it, and it gets more damage with the time

  5. very beautiful and monumental, and you can immediately see its strategic and correct position on the ground

  6. That has to be some 19th century folly, no way a real castle was built like that. I’d guess 1850-1870 or so, making “medieval castles” was in vogue back then.
