Tax wealth to pay for ageing UK population, says thinktank Public spending will rise by £76bn a year, requiring income and wealth to be taxed more efficiently and fairly

  1. Why tax more? Why not just close some tax loopholes and sell off all the Winston Churchill and slave owner statues to private collectors… you know, stuff that will upset the Tories in the same way that them selling off social housing and the NHS upsets the rest of us

  2. Force them to sell their houses if they need care. Stop taxing the young, fuck sake. If 25 percent of pensioners are millionaires in terms of wealth, the government should go after that

Or do nothing. Leave it as it is now

  3. So the total opposite of everything Sunak stands for as he’s part of the extremely wealthy, so there’s no way he’s ever going to do anything other than continue with his reducing taxes for the wealthy and increasing taxes for the poorer.

None of the Tories will ever do anything to increase the tax on their wealthy mates, the UK has one of the worlds largest, if not the largest, off shore tax havens all to allow the wealthy to not pay any taxes or only pay insanely low rates of tax, it’s one of the many reasons for Brexit as the EU was going to crack down on tax havens and the Tories refused to allow this to happen to their tax havens.

  4. If the traditional independent family unit hadn’t been so expertly dismantled by recent politics there would be plenty of children being born and growing into functioning adults, and the elderly would have adult children to help take care of them. Do you seriously trust the state to do anything other than throw you under the bus first chance they get?

  5. >It predicted the government’s pension bill would rise by £24bn a year because the baby boomer generation would be retiring and people would be living longer.

This is odd statement. The Baby boomer generation started retiring 10 years ago. They were born between 1946 and 1964. They’re currently between 58-76 years old. The majority have retired.

  6. nah just hike up my living costs and let the rich dodge tax and take home record-breaking bonuses.

that’ll pay for the all pensioners who have the audacity to work all their lives and expect a decent living quality after they stop being useful.

  7. Time for a national audit of the care companies. I’ve worked for a few and even helped clients after the A4E fuck up had to support clients to manage thier budgets. I’ve seen multiple double billings, fraudulent claims faked milage etc by care companies.

Also go after the mega rich as well

  8. ‘Efficiently’ being the key word here, in my opinion. Close tax loopholes and make it so our overseas territories are no longer tax havens for the rich, famous and powerful. We don’t need to tax the middle class much more than we already do, we need to make it so the rich and companies are paying what they would if they were not exploiting loopholes unavailable to the average person. It would also be a measure almost all of the public will get behind. Targeting the middle class will only result in the idea being thrown out in less than a day, like when May talked about scrapping the triple lock on pensions, targeting the very top earners will get much better results.
