Recently I had to wait for someone on the corner of Korte Meer and Volderstraat, if you want to know why SUV’s in Gent are an absolute disgrace, you should go observe that corner for half an hour on a Saturday. A constant stream of trams, cyclists and pedestrians combined with SUV drivers with the spacial awareness of a potato trying to plow through that tight turn as fast as possible.
Brussels is actually thinking of banning SUV’s in the future.
I do get the safety aspect that is brought up. I sometimes see some idiot driving an imported F150 in the city center, this does not make sense. It’s too big for the roads, too tall to safely spot pedestrians and bicyclists and to make matters worse, they use an LPG loophole that makes them basically low-tax, even though they have big V8’s.
Feel free to drive whatever you like, but I would like to see this change.

The cars they vandalised probably pollute less than the vehicles the vandals use. In the pictures you can see BMW X1, Hyundai Tucson, etc. These are pretty much normal family cars with an SUV look… The base of the cars is the same as a normal sedan, no bigger engine, nothing. This is also the issue with all vehicle related decisions the government makes, they have no clue what they are actually talking about!

SUVs are not that big IMO, it’s just that cars on average have gotten bigger the past 20 years and mostly due to safety concerns. Other normal cars have been increasing in size as well. I don’t see the issue these guys have with SUVs in particular.

Most SUVs are smaller than those cars. Higher, yes. But not taller.
That cars such as Dodge RAM are not really suitable for city traffic I get. But the “SUV” mania imho only generates more co2 due to less optimal aerodynamics. If footprints are an issue they should be stipulated in meters.
