Dit is de grootste schade van onze generatie. De rijken zijn nog nooit zo rijk geweest, en een hardwerkende mens komt niet rond. #EatTheRich
The rise of the working poor.

Interesting, I’m currently working on a European wide research project, specifically dedicated to the working poor.
The article is vague and works with buzz words, but it should be noted that Belgium has a severely lower percentage of working poor as part of the active population than our neighbouring countries. Consistently swinging around 4% as opposed to 6 – 9% in France, the Netherlands and Germany. There also doesn’t seem to be a rise in this number, though the volatility of that statistic makes it possible that this can change on a whim.
“Aanvullend inkomen” on top of a wage is just subsidizing companies to underpay their workers. I don’t really mind subsidizing employment, but subsidies should depend on how valuable to society that work/company is. Not some blanco cheque to crap companies selling crap.
I think this is something felt strongly in the past 5 month, as prices for basic food and utilities rise, well, I believe we will all need side hustles, or to get wage rises as well which… I believe less in. Sooooo… I wish myself and all of you goodluck and strength I. These upcoming hard economic times.
Deprimierend…
Thank you Vivaldi for doing exactly squat to address the cost of living crisis. They’ll get their comeuppance in 2024.
I think it’s time to simply raise the tax free income to the year equivalent of our minimum full-time wage.
The keyword here in the article is **SINGLE PARENTS**. I understand that single parents are screwed!!! However, for a single person, there’s absolutely no poverty.
I remember 4 years ago when I had my first job as a 4/5 software developer, my salary was 1600 bruto. I read similar articles which non-ironically classified me as below the poverty line, and I always felt it wrong. I lived in an amazing studio in the center of Leuven with huge floor to ceiling windows and amazing views of the city, i didn’t scrimp on utilities like heating or water, I went to restaurants once a week and did take-out every week, I travelled a little. I did not deny myself anything. I really did not get how they call this salary below poverty line.. Still don’t.. If you’re alone, it’s plenty… However, if you add children then yeah, definitely way too little.
One time I saw a documentary of a guy receiving handicapped welfare. He was complaining that 1450 netto per month is too little, which was again more than my salary at the time.. Dude lives (alone, with **horses**) in a huge unheatable old house.. How about downsize to affordable housing and don’t keep horses as pets… Then 1450 netto is awesome for a single person never having to work.
In case anyone wanted to read the actual study (in French) in stead of the HLN article:
What study, what wages are we talking about here? What costs are people making that are causing these financial issues?
