Am I the only one who thinks some of these rules are reasonable? Clearly it’s not okay to to call a vegetarian product “kipstukjes” (correctly spelled), but somehow “kipstuckjes” is okay. Whenever I read those product names, I can’t help but feel like this is American-level “^i ^can’t ^believe ^it’s ^not **BUTTER**”-type marketing.

Ja goed, op voorwaarde dat vlees producten ook correctere naamgevingen gaan gebruiken zoals “Dood stuk kalf” of “Dode kip, gepluimd en ingespoten met water om het meer gewicht te geven”. Ik ben voorstander van correcte naamgeving. Als we dan toch ineens bezig zijn kunnen we Nutella chocolade gaan hernoemen naar “Gesuikerde palmolie met wat cacao en hazelnoten”.

* Because the French have drafted a decree which legally bans the use of some combinations. Please note that our document is a guidance, not a law.

What you never see is the blatant misuse of products being sold under names that could confuse even the most experienced consumers. There is massive price push on industry right now to keep costs low (“can we make our desert with milk powder and still call it ‘creme brulé’? Us: maybe call it ‘milk powder brulé”?). So we need to be double sure that consumers actually get a clear information of what they buy.
We’ve decided to let this one pass, despite the judgement of the ECJ, That’s how much we love our industry and trust our consumers.

And YES, I know it’s obviously marked as being vegetarian, and yes I know it’s always placed in a different part of the grocery store. But Colruyt for example has their own branded vegeterian alternatives as well but they’re simply called “vegetarische spiesjes/balletjes” or whatever. And I really like them. They taste very good and we have a vegeterian alternative to meat on our menu at least once a week but just call a cow a cow and stop making up confusing names.
