I’ll keep it short.
What’s the difference between the isle of Harris and the isle of Lewis whilst they seem to be part of the same landmass?

  1. Something interesting to note is the name of the settlement Tarbert. There’s a few of them around the west coast and it’s a Viking name that denotes a place where the gap is thin enough to allow a longboat to be carried across a peninsula/isthmus/bit of land between water. This suggests a pinch point and a natural boundary between two places. So Lewis and Harris split there for that reason. Fun little story, I used to work at a hotel in one of the Tarberts and it was relatively common for people to turn up to wrong one having made hotel reservations for a place on Harris and suddenly discover that they were actually in Kintyre and vice versa.
