Crime is a problem in low income communities including poor white Appalachians because poverty leaves you more vulnerable to everything from health issues to addiction to mental health issues. It reduces your total number of years of education and your lifetime earnings. Poverty, especially when combined with addicts, also leaves you under pressure to come up with money. Sometimes it’s easy to get money via illicit means. It doesn’t much matter if you are a member of the Aryan Brotherhood or the Crips or the Orejones.
