Residents of Clontarf who protest over the flood defence wall, check what this has held back…

  1. Drove through Clontarf last week and while I understand the argument about flood defences messing up the view, the current solution is to leave a load of sandbags all over the place. Some of them are bursting and look like shite so I cant understand how that’s a better solution than a well designed permanent structure.

  2. Wouldn’t mind but the view is generally shite down in Clontarf. Most times the water is out so its just a sludge filled mess.

  3. You only need a flood defense once. That one time is the difference between life and death. It is the difference between total loss of all homes versus everything safe.

  4. Wait, I obviously missed this, people are protesting against a flood defence wall?

They do understand that is someone has decided an area should have a flood defence wall, it’s because they are at a higher risk of flood, yeah?

  5. Ah here, you are being a bit disingenuous. Do you really think we could build something like that here in this country, that wont be delayed by about 20 years and then rendered useless becasue the water level has risen again or run into trillions of euros? And if we did manage to created a working one, can we really be sure that the ESB wont ruin it by [dumping an equivilant volume of water onto the walls during the height of a storm?](https://www.irishtimes.com/news/crime-and-law/courts/supreme-court/esb-could-face-huge-bill-over-ucc-flood-damage-1.4299119)

  6. The Corpo wanted to do a the cheapest possible flood barrier, which would have PERMANENTLY blocked the view and wrecked an amenity for everyone. People were right to object.

Same as the ‘temporary’ cycle track along Sandymount Strand that would have made it one-way and caused huge disruption for people who use cars – the Corpo could build a separate cycle track with its own underpass at the Merrion Gates, but it would cost more, so they thought, oh, let’s do it on the cheap and set one group of Dubliners against the another.

The Greens are at 4 percent in the polls today, and the reason is that they support this sort of cheapo approach by the Corpo on ideological grounds.

  7. I rent a gaf near the Dollymount bridge. The roads are fucked everywhere for miles around because everyone is either retired or sitting at home being wealthy and nobody wants roadworks outside their house. My motorbike is dying here.
