Walking around certain areas in the country I always notice the amount of vacant/abandoned property we have.
I got curious as to why malta is one of the few countries in the EU without any vacant property tax and I stumbled upon this article:
Now, I believe that such taxation would actually benefit the masses as developers would think twice before constructing eye-sores and the majority of the owners of abandoned property would not let it sit there incurring tax bills.
However, reading the comments, all the Maltese (kuntent jien kuntent kullhadd boomers) seemed to be against it. I understand that the comment section is not the best place to get an idea of what the population thinks but still.
So this got me thinking, what do you all think about such a tax?

I think it would help families figure out their differences and solve the accommodation issue.
I then think they’d all get turned into Boutique hotels overnight.
Needs property tax. Taxed heavy on second property and increases progressively considering that property is a basic human need it should not be a source of wealth
I agree. But politicians own several properties so they won’t do it. They will also lose all future elections.
