Why would the US forbid this? Are they not a British/French collaboration? I know Britain has said they can’t be used on Russian soil, where does the US come into this?
To me it seems like the US actually doesn’t want Ukraine to win. It’s obvious to me that this “escalation” bullshit is just a cover up to prolong the war.
If the US wanted to, Ukraine could win the war in a couple months. They could allow deep strikes in Russia with JASSM-XR missiles and provide a thousand Abrams / Bradleys, hundreds of F-16s and all the logistics support needed through contractors.
But instead, Ukraine is getting a trickle of aid and is HELD UP at EVERY SINGLE corner.
US being the bully. I am sick and tired of them playing god with the lives of the military and civilians in Ukraine. They failed to give up the restrictions when NK ballistic missiles were fired by the Russians into Ukrainian territory. They let Russia escalate but reiterate the restrictions even after civilian hospitals are intentionally targeted. They prolong the suffering and it is getting to the point where they are just as much responsible for the extermination of Ukrainian lives as the Russians…
As a Brit, have at it! You should be using them in Russia to inflict critical, strategic damage.
Just hope Harris will be different than Joe Biden.
Who said that?
Just let them use them, do I have to pull my hair out ?!
Seems like America wants to prolong the war to get a few more contract deals for weapons
Please stop the teaspooning aid!
which of Putin’s “Red Lines” is Biden Worried about? The last straw was supposedly an “Existential Threat to Russia”, which has now occurred with the Kursk invasion.
Easier to ask forgiveness than permission.
UK, not US. If you really meant StormShadow, not ATACMS
How is this possible? US decides policy on UK weapons?!
No need to forbid anything. Russia has no idea at this point.
This missile might seem like the stuff of science fiction but I strongly believe that UA can build it’s own.
Theres 3 components to the problem, and many overlap with other drone development goals:
1 power and energy. Jet turbines have much greater energy density and power density, so a micro turbine program is needed in UA. This can be a technology program that can be used both to power missiles and power new generations of drones with addition of electric generator, a concept RR calls a ‘turbogenerator’.
Axial compressors running on 2 or 3 spools have been developed for missiles and used for decades. There will be off patent generic technologies available to base a design off.
Blisks are compressor or turbine stages machined from a single piece and bring costs down. Spools can be engineered with air bearings to link to turbine stages.
There are two approaches, jets designed to create shaft power ‘turbines’, and jet engines purely designed for gas flow rates and thrust. The design in StormShadow is actually a basic and decades old design with low pressure ratio.
With the latter, these can also be mated to a final stage turbine which rotates slowly, and then this powers a prop, fan or rotor. The engine in this case is referred to as a ‘gas producer’.
So this allows UA to create a turbo fan powered by a micro jet. It doesn’t have to make the jet, it could use commercially available small jets such as those used on powered wingsuits maybe, and this will increase thrust.
2 navigation and EW resistance. The systems developed a decade or more ago with high end cruise missiles were dependent on bespoke engineering with less mature technology. So there are complex methods to combine navigation such as expensive high accuracy inertia navigation, topographic maps and altimetry, and object recognition working together.
But now object recognition and AI has advanced so far with off the shelf technology that more basic inertia navigation, with GPS, and object recognition adapted to map read and track motion of ground objects, it can ignore irrational GPS signals when jammed, identify what would be a rational last reading by known parameters of heading and speed within calculated error margins, and confirmation using scene recognition using known variables like perspective angle and altitude, it can then simplify scene recognition by using probability to load the mostly likely comparison images, reducing processing requirement, and starting with the other data, rotate and size it more or less correctly.
3 aerodynamics
You can copy and slightly adjust other designs taking into account your speed and payload may nit be exactly the same.
Since this would be designed for modern warfare, and new applications, the potential of a high BPR micro jet powered vehicle to carry a range of payload is a possibility, and increasing payload volume can allow missiles that deploy multiple weapons and decoys to reduce interception rate.
Sooner Ukraine can produce its own equivalent the better
Oh, for fuck’s sake!
Get some Swedish boffins on the case already.
We’re already committed above and beyond and I’d guess that there are a few old ideas for a cruise missile lying around somewhere.
Given all the other military tech Sweden has been innovating since… forever, slapping together a missile shouldn’t take that long.
Hang about, it’s our ball and we say they can play if they want!
Easy fix. It is Ukrainian territory now.
UK: “We don’t wanna escalate the situation”
Ukraine: “Yo, dude. We have literally invaded Russia.”
It’s easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission
It’s Ukrainian territory now b*tches!
I guess that the UK allowing long range missiles and the US not would show them up for how weak that policy is. They can’t have that now…
Those wankers, you give weapon but dont let them use it.
