    It’s “unjust”, “provocative”, “Russophobic”, “pro-war” or a “campaign of lies” when **non**-Russians defend themselves with the help of other **non**-Russians against a Russian invasion.

    The infuriating thing is that Fidesz’s base counting millions of ordinary Hungarians who live outside Budapest agrees straight up with *Viktor bácsi*.

    It’s foolish to focus on the frontman when the frontman gets enough legitimacy from ordinary people.

  19. OK… so “Orban fellates Putin” headlines are daily.

    The question is “***What now?***” There are two levels intertwined levels… types of reasons for liberal europe’s flaccid response.

    **Level one** is the EU as a body. The EU doesn’t “do geopolitics.” It doesn’t do a lot of things. EU has a narrow prerogative/structure/habit. It doesn’t have answers to yet unasked questions.

    What if debt crisis? What if war? What if a country leaves? What if one member exits the liberal-democratic pale, misaligns geopolitically or otherwise becomes belligerent? There are no pre-existing answers, and (as it turns out) no deterrence.

    **Level two** is “***issues with liberalism – 2024 edition***” This is an odd sock drawer, and overflowing… so IDK where to begin.

    Modern european liberalism is very uncomfortable with sentiments such as “***my country, right or wrong.***” Both right and left liberalism. We have a real issue considering our own positions as “opinions” or choices. Much more comfortable in a paradigm of truths and obligations. This leads to a jurisprudential mindset. Predictable and non-strategic… but righteous… I suppose.

    But… geopolitics is not jurisprudence. It’s a strategic, oppositional paradigm. Liberalism doesn’t do “strategies” currently. That’s not true of liberalism of different eras… but it is quite characteristic today.

    Anyway… Surely a federation that surrounds Hungary, represents 80% of its trade, 100% of its physical security… surely such a federation has *a* card to play. It turns out that no. There is no hardball.

  22. 1. Suspend Hungary’s EU and Schengen membership until it meets basic democratic standards.
    2. Cut all EU Funds paid to Hungary until it meets those same basic democratic standards.
    3. Stop any form of visa for Russians in the EU (especially in Schengen countries) unless applied for refugee or dissident status.
    4. Send back all Russian nationals, unless applied for refugee or dissident status.

    It can be this simple. But not under German leadership.

  24. If “pro-war” means Russia needs to get the fuck out of Ukraine and restore the borders to what was agreed upon in the Budapest Memorandum (1994) which is also the internationally recognized border of Ukraine, then yes… yes i am “pro-war”

  32. I am going to throw an idea out here. Create an Elections Europe commission that oversees electoral laws, creates voting jurisdictions based on technocratic process rather than politics, and oversees elections as part of their mandate on behalf of all member states. Force every country to join this or they are out of the EU.

    Maybe individual countries can legislate what electoral system and rules they want in order to preserve national sovereignty, but leave the actual deployment and enforcement of them to the non-partisan commission.

    There’s no reason we should leave this to individual member-states, the fact that Hungarian democracy exists in this state within the EU is a disgrace and a wake-up call for the entire union.
