Cost of living: How we pay more than most of EU for cars, concerts and even fast food

  1. Irish people rather buy a brand new car with zero spec whatsoever for 25-30k when they could buy a far better, higher spec car a few years older that will hold its value better since it’s already depreciated. Some of the problems is on Irish consumers buying shite versions of products no matter what the price is.

  2. And if you earn a decent wage you’ll pay an enormous amount of tax.

We also have incredibly high taxes on personal capital gains.

  3. We also get shitty services in return – shit public transportation, a crumbling healthcare system and garbage infrastructure. A win/win for the Irish people!

  4. CGT on investment is the big one. Get rid of it and let the average paddy get some actual returns on their investment.

  5. My favorite wine in Lidl is €7.99 in Ireland same wine in Spain €2.79.
I can understand this with the high duty charged, but the little custard tarts are 4 for €2.50 in Ireland but 33c each in Spain. This does my head in is there duty on pastries in Ireland?

  6. Because taxes are insanely high and we’ve to prop up a giant welfare state and inefficient civil service, also spending 6 billion quid a year on NGO’s that do nothing of value

  7. VAT is very high here. They dropped VAT temporarily here by 2% and the hospitality rate was dropped also to boost trade. Why not just drop it permanently. Don’t get me started on fuel duties which impacts everything. Case in point the postage stamp increase this week.

  8. Of course we do, we have a government that only knows how to throw money at a problem. Shower of useless lazy clueless fucks. First thing I’d do if I was the leader of this country would be to force a mark up percentage cap on the prices of any goods sold by any foreign chains that would inflate/deflate based on the salaries they pay their staff. Paying your employees minimum wage? No more than 5% mark up for you buddy! Don’t like it, get the fuck out and stop taking advantage of the people of this country. You will not be missed and you will be replaced by an Irish company that values their local community. But no, FFG only knows how to bend over and spread their cheeks for foreign businesses.

  9. Hahah has the author of this piece come down in the last shower?

If not, they really picked the low hanging fruit on what to write about that people already know.

  10. Second hand car market has gone to shit because of Brexit. Lets just pick a date in a few years and change to driving on the right side of the road. That would open us up to the second hand car market of all of the EU.

  11. I’ve been living in Ireland after moving from the UK for 10 months now and the cost of just about everything is just insane. Not to mention the fact that alot of things are just unobtainable in stores or online, from what I understand before brexit people would order alot from the UK but import tax has put a hault to that.

  12. There should be a bigger conversation about starting to drive on the right hand side of the road.

Is standards for emissions change from the UK to the rest of the EU it’s very unlikely that manufacturers will build EU spec cars with right hand drive for a market the size of ours.

We should be prepared for car prices to go through the roof or think about opening ourselves up to the European car market, although the cost of switching would probably be astronomical.

  13. VRT is one I’d love to see disappear or at least be amended.
Previous owner of my car bought it in Manchester for £9000 and imported it here when he moved home, had to pay €4900 VRT to register it in Ireland, all for an Irish plate. €4900 for a 10 year old car (yes big engine doesn’t help) is still ridiculous.
Should be just a flat fee for every car imported like €500 or less like some other EU countries.
I’ve seen some newer cars or even cars 5-8 years old that are a bit sportier have €10,000-15,000 VRT slapped onto them for no reason other than greed tbh.

  14. I left Ireland. Moved to Italy and one of the things that hit me first was coming home from a shop, stacking every cupboard and fridge space I had for less than 50euro. So much stuff its incredible.

Rent is maybe half of what Dublin is about. Which is a joke to start with. And that bullshit about income being relative is nonsense. Irish people are flat out being ripped off by tax and landlords.

But when politicians are all loaded why would they even consider looking into it?

  15. We’ll be paying back for the Celtic years for the rest of our days. I won’t even get a bloody state pension at this rate.
